(Anonymous) 2020-04-28 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)I found the HEAVY dose of 80s reference less a tribute than it is the creators elbowing you with a forcefully enthusiastic "See! This game is based on the 80s. We totally love the 80s! Look at all these 80s ref!" I found some of the gameplay decisions frustrating (your health does not recover on each new stage for example, some of the jumping mechanic is pretty loose, etc) and its reliance on 80s narrative means some of the stereotypes are hideously dated (if the Tomboy is able to take care of herself, why do we have to save her at one point? Also ha ha the Big Guy loooooves to eat. Because he's Chubby and Big.) And the cast slowly dying one by one stopped being emotionally engaging after the first one died (which was genuinely shocking and well utilized), ending in an epilogue that did not have an emotional pay-off because this specific character it focused on was never that important to the overall plot/character development in the first place.
I like the visuals and I really love timecop1984's musical contribution to the soundtrack ("Dreams" is so good), but man, it's at best, only an okay game, and worse, missed opportunity.
