Jayzus. WTH, why did they add those weird teeth and lips???

If you figure out that the end result is going to be a disaster, you might as well go all the way.

My first guess was that it was a Racist Blackface Caricature cake, for which "big pink lips and big crooked white teeth" are entirely on-brand.

I cannot see any reason to put those on a hedgehog. I...don't believe this was ever sincerely intended to be a hedgehog, tbh.

Me, either. Yucko.

Nah I think it was. I reckon someone made that mess and then pushed the boat out.

It's actually pretty common for people to attempt this hedgehog cake and end up with similar results. Some are even trying to be funny, in a "Nailed it!" kind of way. It's not racist bakers.

Yeah, it's basically turned into a contest of "who can make the most pathetic creepy looking hedgehog cake and upload it to social media in a "lol omg look at me, how quirkily I failed at this cake" way".

I searched the phrase and found plenty of photos of hilariously bad hedgehog cakes, but this one has a specific vibe of "someone decided to make a blackface caricature, and figured they'd cleverly brush off any criticism by passing it off as a bad hedgehog cake."

Meanwhile, I'd have guessed they were making fun of the creepy 1st version of CGI Sonic with its freaky teeth and eyes. But you do you.

Like...no? Look, racism exists and people can be assholes, but sometimes an ugly hedgehog cake is just an ugly hedgehog cake. "Blackface"? Most hedgehogs are brown. What color should people use to make a hedgehog cake? Like, they have lighter-colored bellies and it's sort of brown/blackish on beige coloring but most people just use chocolate frosting because chocolate is delicious and it's close enough, not because they want to do baking!blackface.

Your theory about someone wanting to be Secretly Racist on the Internet via cake decoration is... I mean, do you really not see how much of a reach that is? What's next, people doing clever dogwhistle racist embroidery? Sly, racist crocheted Amigurumi? Flower arrangements whose secret floral meaning is "Yay for the Patriarchy"? Most people who are racist assholes don't feel the need for (or aren't capable of) such subtlety, much less subtlety through the means of baked goods.

If it helps, the image came from here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/therewasanattempt/comments/dcs6y3/to_make_a_hedgehog_cake/

The (not racist!) cake was made by this person:
https://www.reddit.com/r/shittyfoodporn/comments/diy93w/my_hedgehog_cake_got_shared_before_he_was_finished/

... who was "mortified" that people thought it was racist. This was why they made it: "My friend posted the 4 hedgehog failcakes to her daughter. I (jokingly) asked her son (my son's bff) if he wanted one for his birthday. He said, "sure," sarcastically. So I made him one. It looked horrifying, but it was a delicious, fudge-y mocha cake. He loved it."

Which, as others pointed out, is the reason why 98% of these ugly hedgehog cakes are made. People think the cakes are hilarious (which they are), and they want to make one themselves knowing full well it's going to end badly and more hilarity ensues. No racism!
