Re: What is your favourite movie musical?

.... Oh shit. I mean... uh, they have to have a filmed version in order to show the Tony officials? So, technically it counts?;; I am so sorry, I just completely blew over the word 'movie' in my excitement to talk about musicals!

I completely agree with, you, me and my sister woke up at the crack of dawn, got ready and walked I don't know how many blocks to wait in front of the theatre for 'day of' tickets. We were the second in line, it was cold as hell and by the time the doors opened to get our tickets, the lineup was around the block! We had to choose the seat by chart, and obviously we had no idea what to chose due to the immersive way the cast played in and around the audience.
Like the setting the atmosphere, the inclusion, alone was beyond anything I'd ever seen.
And then it began. I was in a trance, I was floored, honestly the only time I broke out of it was when some asshole old people kept putting their legs on the raised floor in front of them after being told not too, and Josh Groban was forced to leap over them in order to get to his spot and off set (aka, also right in front of me, to which I swear my heart was going to beat out of my chest) Sonya Alone, devastated me in particular, Brittian Ashford's emotions, everything was so perfect. I don't even know what I'm saying anymore;; Sorry!

Natasha, or rather, Denée Benton, was actually ill when I watched the play, as well as Anatole, played by Lucas Steele. I was so sad not to have seen Benton, but the woman who took her place Lauren Zakrin, was absolutely superb in very way! The guy who replaced Anatole, was Josh Canfield, he was amazing! I honestly feel bad for saying this, since it's literally only because I only got to witness Anatole in person by Canfield, but I definitely preferred him in the role!
If I recall correctly, there were a lot of illness going around during that time between the cast, were there any scratches when you saw it?

!! Again I'm rambling! I am so sorry, I just never get to talk musicals/plays very often, so I tend to go a little overboard;; At least I didn't get into the pure agony about them being shafted for the Tony...

No! No worries, you're not rambling! I really loved it, so I'm happy to see someone as enthusiastic as me (moreso?)

You nailed it on the head with the interactivrness -- I was lucky enough to be "called down" either during intermission or before it started, I can't recall, and sit at one of the "main tables" while one of the eneble played the accordion. Amd them to have them dancing so close!

I was lucly enough to go when the Ms. Benton eas performing --y God she has a beautiful voice -- I fell im love with her "No one else", such dulcet sounds, but strong. Amd Anatole was great. Everyone was quite frankly amazing, and I will always believe tjat one of the reasons it was so beautiful was because of the source material; to be humam, to make mistakes, desire amd forgiveness.

I remember when back in...2008? 2007? Maybe 2011...This play was an off broadway piece -- I didn't go at the time (much like when Hamilton ran at the Public Theatre downtown around 2012..
still mad I never went), but it piqued my interest. I went with my best friend within the opening month (or maybe previews) because I needed to see what they had done. Amazing.Just amazing. I thought the won the Tony (they should have!), just so beautiful....I'd see it again if I could.

Ahh~! I am so jealous! What I wouldn't give to be in those seats! <33
I was so enamoured my the performance that me and my sister just stood around for a few minutes before scrounging the sidetables (and holy shit! like tiny, but literal side tables in a broadway production! I was losing my shit!) for little bits to remember the night for, one of the stagehands had to ask us if we lost something we were so reluctant to leave, and when we mentioned the shakers they went and got us a pair. (those damn old people down the row from us didn't even bother passing them around!!) We were kinda shooed from the theatre, but not before I grabbed a few of the loose pages (from the actual book even, not just random script!) that were thrown at the end of the act! They're like my prized possession I swear!

I've been listening to all of Benton's performances, and she sings so beautifully, I agree! She makes for such a passionate and tragic Natasha for sure! They used the source material to perfection! It's a book from 1869, but they honoured the original completely while through even the music alone, they transported the emotion, of, and exactly as you said, human realness though centuries of time. It's such a real story, no matter when or where you live, and it's everything to me!
Like I see the vanity and pride in Anatole, but at the same time I don't exactly blame him for what he did, not only that, he got his just desserts when Pierre found out. Natasha was perfection, is perfection. Objectively I can say any other character in her situation I would not be a fan of, but with her. I not only feel her love, betrayal, and hurt. I feel it too. Even that moment when she calls him "Peter" when Pierre first visits her, I choked up for the hundredth time. Every character I felt this way with. I love all of them because they are all real.
Andrey even. How clever it was, not only the use of his character, but as his actor as well. The story begins with introducing the characters, the first line being, "There's a war going on out there somewhere, and Andrey isn't here..." and he isn't, Andrey only comes home at the end of the play, appears one once in the final scenes. Hearing about what Natasha has done, her refusal, her illness, "smiling like his father, coldly, and maliciously." Pierre telling him that "you told me once that a fallen woman should be forgiven", and Andrey replying that, "But I didn't say that I could forgive." The same actor played both Andrey and his father, and idk how to explain it, but the use of that switch is brilliant.

But I'm getting off topic again!!!

The off-Broadway version was in 2012? But I think that was when Malloy (the creator of the show) played Pierre. The previous run before that (? I think?) had a hit online that a lot of people really liked, and I would have died to see that one too. I live in Canada, a handful (+) of hours drive in, nine, I think by train ride. But we keep our eyes peeled for tours that stop at Detroit. We saw 'A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder' in the Fisher Theatre, oh my god! The MOST beautiful building I've even been in! Or Toronto, where we caught 'Come From Away', (the musical just prepping for opening right beside Great Comet, so at least while waiting for hours in the freezing cold I could admire how the crewmen worked the forklift) which, is also so damn amazing. (also the reason I only by Screech at the liquor store now)

They were shafted to the max at the Tony's! I swear I've never been more angry at the Tony's for their judgement! Ugh! I've typed several tl;dr, already in a single post so I'll have to refrain from adding on with that complete slewfoot!

Sorry for the late rant... and for how excessively long it is! I don't normally find people who liike musicals, let alone have seen Great Comet!
