You do realize that the real Pochantas married someone else in real life, went to England, and was killed by a common cold? Disney got it completely and totally wrong.

Re: 131

[identity profile] agentphillips87.livejournal.com 2008-11-26 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, don't spoil the fun with reality

Re: 131

[identity profile] klutzy-girl.livejournal.com 2008-11-26 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
But I sorta have to. Imagine a class of fifth graders in 1999/2000 shocked by the fact that Pochantas did not marry John Smith like Disney told us. Flash forward to eighth grade, where our American History teacher is surprised about by us telling him that Pochantas married John Smith in the movie.

[identity profile] haleysings.livejournal.com 2008-11-26 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
The secret actually says "I don't care what history says" so yes, I'm guessing the OP's probably aware of it.

Re: 131

[identity profile] klutzy-girl.livejournal.com 2008-11-26 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I must have missed that part.

History trumps Disney though.

Re: 131

[identity profile] haleysings.livejournal.com 2008-11-27 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. Although I do have a soft spot for that movie anyway. (But I like that they had her end up with who she eventually married.)

Re: 131

[identity profile] sparky-ld.livejournal.com 2008-11-26 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
See, the thing of it is, the movie isn't historical fiction. It's fiction very loosely based on history. Like Anastasia, for instance.

Admittedly Disney would have done much better to make up their own names since the story they told bears little resemblance to reality, but that's where I think OP is coming from - yes, it didn't happen that way, but the fairy tale is fun anyhow.

Re: 131

[identity profile] van.livejournal.com 2008-11-26 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
As opposed to all those times Disney got it right?

Re: 131

[identity profile] sparky-ld.livejournal.com 2008-11-26 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Hera was Hercules' mother, tru fax!

Re: 131

[identity profile] ayeayes.livejournal.com 2008-11-26 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, Disney never said that Hera WASN'T Zeus's sister, sooo.....at least the original Hercules wasn't inbred. :/

Re: 131

[identity profile] windbell.livejournal.com 2008-11-26 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
...did Pocahontas end up marrying John Smith in Pocahontas II or something? I'm pretty sure Pocahontas ends with John Smith getting shot and going back to England and not marrying Pocahontas. Even Disney isn't that insane (or maybe it is, whatever).

Re: 131

[identity profile] sparky-ld.livejournal.com 2008-11-26 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't ask how I know this, but Pochahontas II is about her going to England as an emissary with John Rolfe. She actually does end up staying with Rolfe in the end... aaaand they go back to America together.

It's not quite as bad as some of the other DTV sequels, but... yeah.

Re: 131

[identity profile] anidlefish.livejournal.com 2008-11-26 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw the end of Pocahontas II a really long time ago, and I think she might have ended up marrying somebody else?

Re: 131

[identity profile] sir-hellsing.livejournal.com 2008-11-26 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
She ended up with her RL husband, John Rolfe.

Re: 131

[identity profile] klutzy-girl.livejournal.com 2008-11-26 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't remember because it's been so long since I saw both movies. Off to Wikipedia.

Re: 131

[identity profile] rhoux.livejournal.com 2008-11-27 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Um, they weren't TRYING to get it right. The deviated from history on purpose... I don't see what's wrong with that. They made the story their own.

Just like Hercules. That movie didn't follow the myth at all.

Re: 131 (a bit of a rant against Disney...)

[identity profile] horitsu-kami.livejournal.com 2008-11-27 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
And you realize that Disney gets EVERYTHING completely and totally wrong? Yes, I know that the real Pocahontas was raped by a group of Europeans, married John Rolfe (I think that was his name), changed her name to Rebecca, moved to England and died of either a cold or the flu.

But it's marketed for children. 20th and 21st century American parents don't want their kids watching movies where one of the main characters dies, even though that's what happens in nearly every story 'adapted' (read raped in order to fit the big screen and make zillions of dollars) by Disney. It's sad, really.

The old stories are so good. If people today are really that much more fragile than the people who originally read these stories, what's the point of continuing the human species? Come on, Disney. Give us something worth calling an adaptation. As a so-called advanced civilization, can't we take it?

Re: 131 (a bit of a rant against Disney...)

[identity profile] klutzy-girl.livejournal.com 2008-11-27 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Pocohantas was raped? I never heard that part of the story. I only heard about marrying John Rolfe, changing her name to Rebecca, having a baby or two, and dying of the common common/flu.

Re: 131 (a bit of a rant against Disney...)

[identity profile] doyle_sb4.livejournal.com 2008-11-27 09:51 am (UTC)(link)
She does move to England and marry John Rolfe in the sequel, but it's one of the worst movies I've ever seen in my life.

Re: 131 (a bit of a rant against Disney...)

[identity profile] lunaste.livejournal.com 2008-11-27 10:51 am (UTC)(link)
Well, oldschool Disney can be pretty fucking hardcore. The Beast was stabbed in the back, Frollo falls into a lake of fire, Scar gets ripped apart by hyenas, and Ursula gets stabbed through the guts with a big wooden spike.

I don't think having your main character raped would be very good for Disney, but I always thought that the old movies (90's and before, but mostly the 90's movies) walked a fine balance between too sugary (Cinderella, wtf? Always hated that movie) and too brutal (the original legends).

Don't talk to me about new kids' movies and the Disney Channel, because ugh. New movies and series pretty much think that kids are retarded (repeating the plotpoints about every five minutes) and that they can't handle anything (you can't even SAY death).

Re: 131 (a bit of a rant against Disney...)

[identity profile] gogo-ergo-sum.livejournal.com 2008-11-27 01:24 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL. "Old School Disney" is Lady and the Tramp, the Fox and the Hound, Bambi, Pinocchio, etc. That's old school.

Re: 131 (a bit of a rant against Disney...)

(Anonymous) 2008-11-27 01:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, Frollo's song about Esmeralda implies sexual violence, which surprised me. And the scene where he falls into the lake of fire is one of my favourite things ever.

Re: 131

[identity profile] luxis-lil.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
SO? It's a beautifully done movie for children and the kiddies will be set straight in fifth grade anyway.

Re: 131

[identity profile] klutzy-girl.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
I remember finding that out in fifth grade. I think pretty much every single one of us was surprised.

I think my favorite Disney movie of all time is "Fox and The Hound".

Re: 131

[identity profile] luxis-lil.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Now THAT film destroy my soul :( Great film but man, oh man, is it SAD.
