Cultural spelling difference =/= slang.

I totally understand not wanting a British character to say 'trunk' or an American character to say 'lorry', but "colour"/"color"? Seriously? Do you honestly expect a Brit to take all the 'u's out of their words to suit?

I figure, the narrative can use anything it likes within reason, but if it's a characters speech or their thoughts? THAT'S when one should care about the cultural differences.

Not the OP, but yeah, I do. I put them in when I'm writing UK based fandoms and take them out for US. And I have less respect for people who don't take the trouble.

If you're not writing first person (and IMO even if you are) what could spelling that is equally accepted as correct either way possibly contribute to or detract from the narrative? Do published novels in the US remove British formatting?

I find that more than a little anal retentive and slightly silly.

It's across the board. Usage, idioms, spellings. To me "colour" in an American-based fanfic is as wrong as "pots of pills" would be.

I consider it being respectful of the source material.

What spelling should I use if I write in English about a French or Japanese fandom? Should I use «...» instead of quotation marks? Should I draw comics from right to left?

Eh, my little cabbage?

Excellent question, to which I don't have an answer, but I'd certainly find a way to make it as authentic in idiom as possible, even if there's a language switch. In the American/British situtation, it's not that difficult and I really feel it should be done whereever possible. I'm working on a [livejournal.com profile] yuletide fic for which I'm using a specifically English Beta to make sure it sounds/looks right.

I think it's important to have the write spellings and usages. Sorry if that's too pedantic for you.

Usage is very important, but spelling... That doesn't contribute to the feeling that it's happening in the world of the source material. It's a meta thing where you're trying to create an illusion that it is being written about in the same country as it was originally written about, which draws attention to its fictionality. It also seems to mean that nothing should ever be translated in the full sense of the term; only babelfished word for word, which we all know does not lend itself to understanding. I mean, if you're going to be that pedantic, that's where that train of thought ultimately ends for me.

Yes, sometimes they do. The Harry Potter books are a good example (besides Philosopher's Stone --> Sorceror's Stone, they take the u's out of words and change s's to z's)

Re: 151

[identity profile] trinity-destler.livejournal.com 2008-11-27 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, because as far as they're concerned "colour" is wrong and it hardly matters to the story if they change it. Changing the title is something else, but multiple spellings that are pronounced essentially the same are no loss.

Re: 151

[identity profile] reaperfox.livejournal.com 2008-11-27 09:46 am (UTC)(link)
Hrm. I find that entirely too pedantic, myself. The way a person spells narrative has absolutely nothing at all to do with the setting or characterisation of a story. I've read plenty of stories set in uk fandoms by American authors who spell it 'color' and couldn't care less. Hell, "real" authors don't do it, why on earth should fanfic writers?

I think, honestly, there are way more important things to story telling than making sure your narrative is THAT authentic. Like, y'know, making sure your characters are portrayed accurately. There's a huge difference between saying 'the Doctor's coat was brown in color' in the narrative and having him say "Donna! Have you looked in the trunk??"

*shrug*

YMMV. I think it's sloppy writing. Idioms are more important than spelling, but they both contribute to a sense of "rightness." That this is happening in the world of the source material.
