153 - LOL, Why are they at Barnes and Nobles anyway? You guys have a crappy manga section. I thought these kids knew they're supposed to go to Borders - they're the ones who keep shit in stock! (J/k, BTW. I'm sure it varies by region in any case)

I worked fulltime for a year and a half at a Waldenbooks and Borders Books and Music. It's such a bizarre thing to me - I have been an anime and manga fan for nearly 12 years, and the same store used to maybe have half a shelf of manga. Most people who worked there didn't know the term. Now a days, Borders caters to these fans WAAAAAAAY too fucking much - to the point where I had to let them stand around and read the manga in the store. (In a WALDENS. That's a TINY store to just let people stand and read in!) While I'd sometimes meet cool fans whom I could have conversations with, I would get my share of annoying anime fanbrats as well. I don't work retail anymore, but when I go to stores that have an anime/manga section, I'm sometimes afraid I'll end up having an annoying fan encounter.

And you have to imagine how embarrassing it is for me, because it makes ignorant people like yourself, who immediately label a monstrously large group based on the actions of a loud and vocal few, think that ALL anime and manga fans behave like this. Are there ones that do? You bet. Do all of us act this way, or condone actions like this in public place like a mall? Heeeeelll no. In fact, they annoyed the fuck out of me too, and I got to deal with it 40 hours a week.

I'd still take squeeing teenagers over the political extremist who came in and would try to push their beliefs on you as you're helping them. And might I add, you get annoying kids for things other than manga. But yes, bottom line is, they do suck, even when you enjoy the genre.

...Oh, wow. I somehow NEVER got that in retail. But then again I worked at a Target, but...geez, that's just horribly rude. What is HAPPENING to manners in our country? It's driving me up the wall.

I know, right? It's absolutely ridiculous. The one saving grace is that it didn't happen THAT often. The annoying teenagers were a more common occurence. But when it did happen it sucked. I was working when one of Anne Coulter's (an extreme rightist who has been known to disgust Republicans as well as Democrats) books came out, so I got one or two comments regarding that. The worst was not exactly political, but could fall into that category - I had a little old man tell me I was being offensive to Christians when I said "Happy Holidays." I tried to explain to him that I was Christian myself, but I had Jewish friends and friends of other religions whom I wanted to include in my well wishes. And he told me a Jewish person should hear Merry Christmas and translate it in his head to Happy Hannukah. I was very polite and said we would have to agree to disagree...but I started crying after he left. To this day I wish I could have kicked him in the nuts.

LOL, sorry for the rant there. Bottom line is, people can REALLY, REALLY suck.

LOL! I think I'm gonna add that to my list of ridorkulous quotes! It's like a religious Babel Fish!

Granted, I tend to say Merry Christmas, but working cash wrap in a bookstore during the hols in a hugely Catholic part of the country...you've already got, like, an 85% chance, and if they're buying "The Cajun Night Before Christmas" or "The Littlest Angel"... (man, you learn so much about people working cash-wrap).

Actually, the manga selection at our B&N is huge. And if it's not with the comics, it's probably in teen fiction. It kind of annoys me, because I'ved moved away from manga and gotten more into mainstream American and indie titles, and they're, like, all crammed on this one shelf-space while the manga takes up the other 3/4 of the big shelf, the encaps, the displays, and half of another big shelf in the teen section. It wouldn't bug me, except it feels like it...spread, y'know? Like, it absorbed copies of X-men and gradually turned them into Wallflower.

i work at a b&n and we have 5 full bays of manga constantly in stock. the manga market has apparently SKYROCKETED. but then again i live in a relatively major city. sometimes, though, people come in and ask for a specific manga that they need TODAY and if we don't have it i tell people to go to the borders that's like a 15 minute walk away XD

what i don't like is the disrespectful people who bend the books way out of shape and leave them in the aisles like they're trash. it's irritating.
