Yesssss. I was seriously the only person in class who loved that book. D: That one and Catcher in the Rye. Everyone hated both of those and I was just sitting there going "... why? D:"

I think the only three books I've had to read for school that everyone agreed on were The Giver (which everyone, surprisingly, loved to pieces), The Red Badge of Courage (EVERYONE INCLUDING THE TEACHER HATED IT LMFAO), and The Pearl (four years in a row of having to read the exact same short story! do not want do not want do not want). I even know people who absolutely hated Of Mice and Men, which made me sad inside my tiny heart. ):

i never had to read any of those three. 'of mice and men' was okay; i really liked the relationship between lenny and george, but i found the foreshadowing much too heavy-handed, and i had pretty much predicted the ending from a quarter of the way through the book.

as for catcher in the rye....no, i SERIOUSLY hate that book. holden is a whiny little bitch. i get his appeal to some people, i guess, but to me i just hated him so much as a character that it was difficult to enjoy a book thats told entirely through his perspective, while he's made out to be a sympathetic character because.....just NO. all he ever does is complain and make things worse for himself and i cant STAND people like that.

I don't remember much about the writing style (I tend to not like Steinbeck as much as people say I should, because his style's just a bit much for me in some of his stuff, especially The Grapes of Wrath), but the characters gripped me enough that I really liked it.

Holden doesn't appeal to me at all either, but I still liked how different Catcher in the Rye was and, while I basically only felt disdain for the guy (and felt a little sympathetic for him by the very end, aww lol his dream), he was interesting enough to me that I enjoyed seeing him mess himself up -- didn't enjoy-enjoy it, but you know what I mean. It interested me.
