Re: 151
The issue I have with her, as well as Laurell K Hamilton, is they are raping a genre that I used to adore. Ever since the Anita Blake series started (or at least, this is about when I noticed the trend), the whole 'urban fantasy' genre has become code for 'women who have sex with vampires' and truly great urban fantasy authors like Neil Gaiman and China Mieville are having their genre taken over by the angsty Urban Fantasy Butt Parade. Urban fantasy is supposed to have more to do with magical realism than vampires and plucky heroines with shitty attitudes.
Regarding what you said about Meyer being a horrible writer... well, Anne Rice is just at the other end of the spectrum, for me. Meyer is a drab, boring writer who doesn't ever get to the point where the reader feels truly engaged in the story. But Anne Rice is way too loquacious, to the point where the reader gets bored. It doesn't help that she really is batshit insane and thinks she's the best thing God ever gave to vampire novels.
Hamilton and Rice are more similar than you'd like to admit, I think. Not in their writing styles, but in the way they view their works. I have next to no respect for Anne Rice as an author because of the inflated sense of worth she gives to her work. And I have read some interviews and blogs written by Hamilton that smack of the early stages of the same 'head-gets-any-bigger-they-could-put-it-in-a-parade-I'm-the-only-one-who-can-write-about-vampires-properly-dammit' syndrome Anne Rice suffers from.
So, yeah. Those're my two cents. I'm shutting up now. =/
Re: 151
I understand where you're coming from with that. I think the Blake series didn't start off so bad, though. I mean Guilty Pleasures was pretty good and then it just went WAY down hill from there. And in my opinion NO ONE can do Urban Fantasy as well as Neil Gaiman. He's my all-time favorite author.
You know, you said EXACTLY what I think about Meyer and Rice, I just couldn't put it into words. I offend a lot of people but I always say that Rice is the Tolkien of the vampire world b/c I don't like how wordy either of them are. And I agree so much about Meyer. Side note, Anne Rice didn't used to be as bad I think at least, from what I read The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty. It wasn't as wordy, but it WAS written like bad BDSM fan-fiction. So I admit I take issue with Rice and Meyer almost equally, just Meyer a bit more... as their writing goes.
I've never heard anything about Hamilton being big headed, but I'll take your word for it as I must say as I'm not exactly a hardcore fan of Hamilton and the only vampire novels I really like that I've read are Dracula and Lost Souls... a few others as well, but those are my favorite. But, yeah, I pretty much agree with you, but with all the people around me falling into this Twilight phase I'm compelled to just worry for the world as for all the issues I have with the unhealthy relationships and shoddy writing in the Twilight series.
I ramble on all the time, so I love long replies so you're not bothering me with 2 cents at all. ^_^
Re: 151
I was ok with Anita, too, up until she stopped feeling like a normal human being. She was always annoying, but at least for a while she was kind of a real human being. But then she started getting all these disgusting powers and suddenly she could do no wrong and I just got fed up. I know she's got some epic effing struggle in each book, but to me it seemed like she never had any real problems. I hear she's like a succubus now or something.
You know, I think you just said what I meant to include about Twilight. I was fine with those books when I first read them back in January. I knew they'd never be my favorite books, but I was also good with them being the mindless entertainment targeted at teenage girls that they truly are. But then they exploded into mainstream and just got blown out of proportion, and honestly, the insanity that it's turned into is what really has be resenting the series.
True story, I work at a summer camp, right? And in the fall and spring, we have school groups come in and do different programs. I can't tell you how many women I met who were obsessed with Twilight. Women my mother's age, going on and on about how Twilight was just so wonderful, and didn't I just love Edward? I had one woman tell me that she hated reading the second because she couldn't handle Edward being gone. Like he's a real character! She also said that they had movie posters in every corner of her classroom so that she could see Edward no matter where she was. I was just like... really?
If Neil Gaiman is your favorite author, you have superb taste in books, lemme just tell you. I'm not even sure how many times I've read Neverwhere. A lot, though. I think I've gone through three copies of it or so.
Re: 151
I absolutely agree with what your saying about Anita. I really liked her in Guilty Pleasures then she got more annoying as the books went on and less human as well. She's a succubus now? O.O I need to catch up. If it's that ridiculous I want to know about it. Wow. I can't remember the last book I read of the series, so I'll have to find that out.
That's exactly what I'm saying about Twilight. I read Twilight and I thought it was okay and a book that I could occupy my time with and I would even read the rest of the series but this craze that's going on just flabergasts me. There's videos on YouTube of girls talking about it and it makes my jaw drop that they worship it. And I've heard the phase 'best book ever' dropped a few times which really irks me with all the other great books floating around out there.
Wow, I think women and even young girls need to lay off of how perfect Edwards is. It really is such an unhealthy relationship and it makes young women expect unhealthy things. I will say I thought the movie was less so and it came off WAY less creepy then it did in the book, but still stalking and over protective is not something I'd want my child to think was right. That lady would scare me, though. I wouldn't know what to say to that. There's this 21 year old lady on YouTube Nutty Madam or something like that and she actual is pissed at Bella because she wants Edward. She's not the only one, but she's the only one I've seen that wrote a song about it. And she called Meyer a genius.
And thank you, I'm glad you think so. I love him so. His writing style is just so great. You sound like me and my copies of Good Omens and Anansi Boys. I'm only on my first copy of Neverwhere, but that book is fantastic. Good Omens is my favorite, but I love all of them.
