I never understood this mindset. People don't even tag for canon divergence/AU's anymore it seems, because this way of thinking has gotten so popular. It's endlessly annoying imo.

AU is for like Coffee shop or A/b/o twists for me, for a major change in a world building and 'canon divergence' seems like a new terms. I'm old.

I always feel like "canon divergence" is the basic state of fic, so have never quite understood the need fot tagging it.
Obviously it's "canon divergent", it's not canon.

nayrt

I tend to think of "canon divergence" as being something like "This is set back in Season 2 and is not compliant with later seasons" or "In this fic Bob didn't die in the gas explosion after all" (i.e. it's canon-compliant up to a point). Whereas I think of AUs as "Everyone goes to Hogwarts" or coffee shops, etc. By that definition, I would understand not tagging "canon divergence" specifically, but indicating where it's set in the timeline or a character not dying as in canon might still be a good idea.
