Where I see it is when a canon ship they don't like happens, so they do the divorce thing.

Or, even worse, do the "I'mma cheat and NOT divorce" thing.

i can one-up you: 'i'mma cheat and NOT divorce my SO and my SO will be 'accepting' and 'happy' with the situation bc non-canon ship is clearly So Much Better For Me and SO has no spine or self-respect'.

Almost all the fics related to one to my OTPs (either A/B or A/C) tagged also with B/C have that trope and is frustrating, specially when C shows no sadness for being involved in a cheating thing, despite in the tv show he cares for A in one way or another. Is the easiest way to see if an author hates A so much.

tbh as far as i'm concerned ppl who write that kind of fic don't like any of the characters, because who the hell writes their faves being the worst ppl imaginable and enjoys it??

i guess on some lvl it might be 'sticking it' to the canon ship they hate, but that kind of shit is pretty much a guarantee to turn me off a ship because i hate those kinds of insanely spiteful shipper-bases, like ya'll(general here) aren't making your side look good yanno? lol.

AYRT: >because who the hell writes their faves being the worst ppl imaginable and enjoys it??

Far as I can see, people that hates that character so much, that they RP the OTP to hurt the character in one way or another. Which might make them look worse than just not writing something related to another pairing.

ugh, yeah you're probably right about that, and imo it does look so much worse than just writing B/C where A/B didn't happen. like just ignore it? but then i guess if A/B is such a big thing in the canon where they can't i guess it inspires nasty OTT fic for their B/C ship. tragic.

If you want to break up a canon ship to write your OTP, I really wish divorce was MORE common. Especially amicable divorce where the characters still mostly like each other, they just both acknowledge it didn't work out, and it'll be OK.

Too much turning the canon spouse into an abuser, a criminal, a cheater, making them absolutely awful to "justify" the breakup. You don't have to justify a breakup by making one of the people the bad guy! Sometimes two good people just don't belong together!

Yeah. For one of my ships, let's call it A/B to give it a name, B is married with children in canon, but he is presumed dead while he and A have their great adventure, and intends to stay that way, because he thinks he's been a shit husband/father and anyway his wife, C, has been growing closer with D, whom B considers to be a much better man than himself, and he wants them to be happy. At the end of the adventure he decides his family deserves to know he's alive, but he doesn't say he intends to try to salvage the marriage. The amicable divorce practically writes itself, and yet the A/B fics that address it at all make C a stone cold cheating bitch and D an outright monster who wants to ruin B's reputation and get him imprisoned, or if possible killed. I don't understand why that's necessary.

honestly, its probably because those authors find "did not tell my family i was alive" so awful that they need the relationship to be equally bad on both sides to still present their fave as a good person.

THIS. That's how I prefer to do it. I like the canon spouses as characters, too, and they're not abusive jerks, so it'd feel weird to me to write them as such awful people. But yeah, there's a variety of reasons why marriages end, it'd be nice to see more fics acknowledge and explore that.

I also hate the "turn the canon spouse/relationship awful" trope because it's a way to try and make it seem like the author's OTP was only ever able to love each other, and no other love could ever compare, and I don't really like that, either. Many people manage to love more than one person in their life, and each relationship a character has can be beneficial and special to them, or bring out the best in them as a person, just in very different ways. I like seeing how a character's past relationships helped shape who they are, and how that made them into the kind of person the other character I ship them with would fall in love and want to be with.
