I can get very annoyed when people don't do their research. At the same time most of what I know about certain customs and traits is through osmosis from reading about those cultures.
Reading this secret it took me a minute to remember that Britain doesn't celebrate Thanksgiving, so if I was reading a fic where HP loved himself a turkey feast, it would raise some alarm bells, but I don't think it would come to me right away why it bothered me.

I think I've just lowered my standards to a point that I'm just happy whenever someone gets something /right/. Of course when something rubs me the wrong way, I'm out, but it seems like less and less are doing that lately... (of course I've been a lot of fandoms that are based in america so that eliminates most of the ignorant people who don't do the basic research)

That's ... sad. Having to get used to people making mistakes due to a lack of research.

Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I'm English and my current main fandom not only has an American setting, but it's also late Victorian era.

The sheer amount of research I've done on things like acceptable terms and linguistic differences to what underwear would be used in the era in that part of the world, what guns were and weren't around then and when they were commonly in use and medical limitations ... I swear I spend more time researching than writing these days. Which is fine, I like research! But it's pretty time consuming.

Worth it in the end, though.

I guess ... I'd just hate for somebody to go "Did Not Do The Research." at one of my fics.
