Sometimes kids write fanfiction about their favorite kids' book characters doing things they're familiar with. Just back-button out and leave them to it. They'll either get smarter or grow up to be President.

Oops. That's a fair point. I meant "smarter" as in "better informed," not "intrinsically more intelligent."

We're not born knowing/caring how things work in other countries, but most of us pick it up as we get older. Some of us learn how to turn orange instead.

It's really not. And that's fine. Why should young people writing fanfic for fun be exacted to give a shit whether their fantasy reflects reality?
