Keyboard shortcuts and grammar question

(Anonymous) 2020-05-04 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't pay for Word, so I need to use the keyboard command alt + 0151 to create em-dashes. But three quarters of the time, it creates the em-dash at the very end of the line, rather than where I want it.

What's weird is that sometimes it creates the em-dash in the right place. I can't figure out what makes this happen - why it appears where my cursor is located sometimes, and other times at the end of the line.

I've tried googling it, but I can't find any answers. Does anybody know?

Sorry that I don't have info, but I'm confused. What does not paying for Word have to do with using a keyboard command?

Do you mean you're using a 'free' version, or some other product...?

Apparently if you use Word, the program automatically changes a double dash to am em-dash, so you don't need to use a keyboard command to create em-dashes (or en-dashes) in Word. At least that's the common info I've seen all over the internet. And I definitely remember that Word used to do that, although it's been probably a decade since I've had Word, so I have no idea if that info is current.

But yes, I am using WPS office, because it is free.

Ah ha. Okay - had no clue. I stopped using word ages ago.

If you are interested in changing to something else, Apache Open Office (very much like Word) has settings for doing all sorts of things with en and em dashes. Also free.

Thank you! I'll check it out. :)

In Word, if you type two hyphens immediately after a letter (no spaces) and then keep typing letters, it turns the two hyphens into an em-dash. I had to create my own shortcut in Word to type an en-dash, though.
