Honestly, this usually doesn't bother me unless cars are one of American Character's things. Like if Bruce Banner says boot instead of trunk, I'll notice it but it's not going to bug me. If Dean Winchester says boot, it's going to throw me right out of the story. It's the same kind of thing with mom and mum, except there it depends on whether they're referring to their own mother or someone else's/the concept of mothers. If Buffy Summers asks how someone's mum is doing, it's no big deal. If she refers to Joyce as Mum, then no.

That's just how my brain works, though.
