THIS. I'm currently writing an AU where I transplanted characters from one canon into the world of another canon, but I've still made sure to give them backgrounds that hit roughly the same beats as their canon ones so they're pretty much the same personality-wise, because that's the fun of the whole thing: how can I put these characters in this other setting and have them still be recognizably those characters?
