I still think Moomin should dump his GF.

After having read the original comics I agree wholeheartedly, OP.

I’ve never read Moomin, but this secret’s cute.

"romance is what happens when characters like each other the most."

I resonate with that, actually. I really tend to dislike when the canonically shipped characters are not the characters who share the closest bond. I just don't understand the point of having a ship if the relationship between the shipped characters feels secondary.

It's truth in fiction, though. Sometimes you and your best friend aren't sexually or romantically compatible, and then you discover another friend who is compatible with you. Comments like this rub me the wrong way because according to you, my best friend and I should be a couple. But we don't work as a couple. We're still each other's most important person, though.

AYRT - I don't believe I said anything about real life and how real life relationships "ought to" work. In fact, I know I didn't.

I'm just not interested in seeing romance shoehorned in on the side like it so often is in fiction. I find that boring. I find the whole "hero has his bro who he's incredibly close to on a deep and personal level, and also his hot GF who's...there" approach to romance annoying as fuck. YMMV.

I hate that too. It's especially annoying when the main character has all these adventures and deepening relationships with shared secrets and experiences with other people, and then they (well, he) returns home and we get an "oh, right, there was a girl waiting for him, I guess they marry now" moment and are supposed to believe that that is his most important relationship.

Not exactly...

...I guess we're supposed to believe it's his next big future adventure?
Exploring something new with someone else?
Is this a shot in the dark?

unless you think that romantic relationships should have some type of primacy to matter, why would it matter which relationships is primary or secondary?

Have you seen the new Moominvalley series? There's legit a scene where Moomin tells the Snorkmaiden "you can be my girlfriend til Snufkin comes back." She takes it about as well as you'd expect.

LOL. I haven't read those books in ages, but Snork Maiden was a pretty annoying obligatory love interest character, wasn't she. It was weird, because Tove Jansson was clearly capable of writing female characters that were just as good as her male characters.

This could be my secret (alas, it's not). As a kid I thought that Moomin and Snufkin are dating and I was so mad at Snufkin for ditching Moomin to travel. Moomin waited him on the bridge like no tomorrow and I kept thinking who does that to their boyfriend. The 1990s animation, I've only read one book of the series.
