I wish you would make them. My taste in music is on the classic side and I'd love to see fanvids with older songs in them.

HARD SAME

the only thing stopping me is a complete inability to figure out how to rip dvds to use the footage for vids. I will fucking do it in spite of my old fart musical tastes if I can get over that hurdle.

Don't hesitate, just make them. What the hell does age have to do with anything? Fandom isn't reserved for specific age groups and there's no rule about which decade songs should be used for fanvids.

Eh, I've set vids to 70s and 80s music and it didn't seem to bother anyone. If the song fits, why the hell not?

I suppose if you choose a lot of songs from a particular era, people might conclude that you grew up during that time. But they might just assume that you like that music. I like a fair amount of music from before I was born, I assume that plenty of others do too.

Whether they guess you age or not, why does matter, though? I know there is a perception in some younger fans that fandom belongs to the young. A lot of people grow out of that mindset. Or they leave because they get older. Fandom belongs to the fans. And some day I may not have enough energy (or patience, depending on how it evolves) for fandom, but right now my middle-aged ass is expecting my old ass to still be in fandom.

I don't care what era the song is from, if an author can make it work for a fanvid or a fic or whatever, I say go for it :D! Either it'll be a great opportunity to associate a fandom/pairing with a song I love, or if I'm not familiar with the song, then I get the chance to hear something new. Win-win!

a) it's something that brings you joy
b) it's your heart's desire
c) you could be introducing people to new music! (I at least new to them) I've found songs and artists I didn't know about because of fanvids. Plus, it's always boring when the same type of music gets used in different fandoms ad vids. Variety is the spice of life!
d) No one will really tell your age. If I could make fanvids, some of them would have music from the 40s, 50s, some soul, a little hip hop, some NIN, all over place and time!

I think you should go for it! I like getting introduced to music I haven't heard before through fanvids/AMVs, and to hear songs I've heard a lot in a new context, so I don't think there's anything wrong with older songs in fanvids, whether they're ones I'm familiar with or not.
