Kind-of same? Depending on which is the first novel. I read Heir to the Empire recently and it was fine, but I've never read the next two. I just really, really hated what Zahn did to Leia in it. Mara Jade fell super flat given the hype. And the universe was so small. I'll probably read the next two some day, but I don't feel any urge to do it now.

For the new books, I actually have really enjoyed them. I like the Thrawn/Eli bits. It doesn't really have good catharsis for the bad guy fucking Pryce over, but I've noticed that Zahn tends to fall flat for that in the other Star Wars books I've read from him. Otherwise, they're enjoyable reads.

Which part of Leia did you hate in Heir to the Empire? For the record, she's pretty awesome in the second two books of the trilogy and is given a lot to do in them both.

It's been over a year since I read it, but what stayed with me is how she went into hiding and let everyone else protect her. She seemed super passive. Also, there was nothing about how she felt about her pregnancy, being a mom, or being trained as a Jedi. It felt like this was just how it was supposed to go with her, and nothing about her own goals and thoughts. She felt like more of a prop than a character. I have zero faith in Zahn doing better in future books, and I'd rather read more interesting stuff first.

I would say that Leia grows more in the other books. Her plot takes an interesting turn.
