What's wrong with jpeg and how would that format make a difference in an icon being lost?

jpeg compresses files. Icons themselves don't get lost, but the quality does.

Okay, that makes sense. There are size limits on icons when used here and on LiveJournal, though, so jpegs often work better to be used in this context because of that.

That's never made a difference though. The only time that has affected icons were if they were in gif form.

Yeah. I always made my LJ icons as .png The only time you had trouble with size limits was making animated icons.
