imo theres a big difference between

1) experoencing desire/temptation but never really considering
2) seriously thinking about whether itd be worth it to cheat on your partner/whether you could get away with it
3) a fictional story arc about 2 with great self-congratulatory moral fanfare

the first is normal, the second is...at the very least selfish and disrespectful if youve made a committment and know it would hurt your partner, and the third is just annoying and gross

seemed to me op was mostly talking about 3 fwiw

Even 2 means you're still not a cheater because you didn't actually do it. You have to cheat with another actual person to be a cheater. What you do in your head alone will never cross a line, because no actual real-world harm is done.

It's a potentially interesting story depending on how well-written it is. It doesn't fit in a romance, because romance is kind of by definition idealized, but it could be some good realism.
