Oh man. I've done similar things so many times. Putting things out to remind myself, forgotten they are there, and tripped on them. I think this is a very common thing to do, and you totally shouldn't feel like an idiot for this one.

Thanks for you kind words. It was very avoidable, though, if I had just taken a few moments to consider and, say, put the bin on sink stand rather than the floor and I think that feeling that I had that day has (sometimes) served a purpose in making me (slightly) more careful.
