Do you save fics?

(Anonymous) 2020-05-16 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
If you do, how do you do it? Just bookmarks in your browser? Or AO3? Downloaded?

Yes. I both bookmark on AO3 and download. But I bookmark more than I download. I really mostly only download porny fics plus the occasional absolutely amazing favorite long fic that I know I'll read multiple times.

I download every fic that is over around 7000 words. I got them all organized into fandom/pairing/rating/etc.

Download. I have now plenty of old fics that have been deleted from AO3 or that were only on the writer's homepage. I'd never rely on just bookmarking.

Usually bookmark. Know I should download but I'm too lazy to actually do it.

I tend to bookmark certain fics on my browser (or bookmark searches).

If it's an AO3 fic:
1. if it's med to long (so 10+ chapters) and Complete/WIP I'll download.
2. If it's less, I tend to just save. If it's a WIP, or a short fic I really liked (usually PWP) I'll download.

If it's a FFN or other site, I use ficsave.xyz to save it into a text. Same rules apple

copy + paste into a word doc and then save that word doc into a folder for the fandom in question. i've been doing it for years after i lost a bunch of fics i loved during one of the many fandom purges from sites going down or disappearing.

i always bookmark and comment on the fics that i do save however.

I have tons of book-marked fics on AO3 and up until my tablet died I had downloaded fics from AO3 and FFnet.

My dream one day is to print off a few of my favourite long-fics and make them into books for me to keep (an idea I straight up got from the Dream Daddy game).

Mainly bookmark, some downloads. There's a few fics I can't work out how to save because all the standard options lose some aspect of the original formatting.
I'm also using the wayback machine to recover a weird crossover I read years ago - god that thing is handy!

I download any fic I end up enjoying. I've lost too many favorites to the void through the years, so if I enjoy it, I download it. Or if it's a long fic that looks like it might have an interesting premise, I'll download that so I can read it on my kindle without having to deal with an internet connection.

Back in the days with dial-up internet that hogged the landline and cost money per website you opened on a computer shared by the entire family, I got into the habit of saving every fic I'd read and liked in .txt format. On a floppy.

In this day and age, I use an online bookmarking service to tag fic if I read it on my phone or tablet, and then download them later. If they're 20K+, I usually save them in epub form from AO3. I've also got a Calibre ad-on for FFN.

I haven't tried running the numbers for my fic folder, but it's sorted by fandom, and depending on the fandom, also by pairing or character.

omg

I have a Kingdom Hearts fic (and numerous fan arts/official art) saved on two or three floppies. I don't even have a comp with that drive anymore. Oh those days...

I wanted to hear about your hard drive, but all I got was 3.5 inches and floppy. <3

i mostly just bookmark, but i always have a little inkling in the back of my mind that i should save them differently when they're tha good ones ya feel.

ao3 makes things a lot easier for fic. but back when i read fic in a million different places, i'd save the rly choice stuff, like kink meme fills or stuff from personal sites etc, in private posts on lj/then dw. then i had another private post that was just a directory for all those posts haha. i'd link back to the source in the post, in case i ever wanted to actually rec it or something. but if it ever disappeared i'd still have it. wow i'd forgotten all about that, i haven't done that in years!

Calibre
I also copy past small fics into a Fandom document if there's a lot of them that I like from a kinkmeme or something.

I try to download a copy, I love that we can get PDF's. Best to do it while it's still up just in case it disappears. : (
