I feel you. I LOVE seeing flawed characters grow as people, and I don't mind if they start out really unlikable-- I have favorites who started out as characters I HATED, because they get that growth.

But manchild-becomes-moderately-competent-and-is-rewarded-by-sex-with-hot-lady is so played out... I'd much rather watch someone start out as really loathsome and make serious developmental strides than see someone start out as likable enough but incompetent only to never rise above mediocre.
