Hmm. On one hand, there is something about fandom trainwrecks that is very attractive. It's fun to watch other people flailing and carrying on and you're just there with your popcorn and no fucks to give.
On the other, less embarrassing hand, having some idea of the lunatic depths to which fandom can sink can help you as a member of fandom. It can keep you grounded, and being aware that fandom can get up to crazy toxic shit might mean you're more likely to actually notice toxic shit, rather than just brush it under the 'this is fandom and we're here to have FUN' carpet.

I hadn't thought of it that way before! I guess it's true that I've seen so much fandom nonsense over the years that I kinda side-eye the people who add the the madness, especially since it's often the same crap about how their ship is oppressed, or this ship vs. that ship, or this isn't fair, etc. It's kind of amazing to me how little has changed from fandom to fandom over the last 20 years. I wonder if these people would be more self-conscious if they realized that their bullshit is not only old, but it's been done to death.

Knowing that all this wank has happened before and will happen again does tend to strip it of any potential grandeur, doesn't it?
