Hmm, it's been a while since I've seen it, but I always had the impression that the movie was saying that, while yes, these two friends eventually got together, the "can't be friends" argument was more generally bullshit that even they realized over time, and in fact the best relationships (romantic or not) require true/real/authentic friendship. The "not possible" argument was claimed early on, as I recall, by an obnoxiously "deep" recent college grad,so by nature shouldn't be taken seriously by anyone.

And the fake orgasm scene is a classic, but to each their own.
