Thank you dearest comment secret maker anon! You're awesome!

But... He does need to be nice. The product he's selling is himself an people are rude to him in large part because he acts like an ass.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-20 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
The people he meets are mostly ridiculously rude to him before he even said a single word to them, not the other way around.
Also, the product he sells is bashing things with his sword, not make high class conversation, entertaining people or be some sort of cuddly teddybear. I wouldn't really expect a mercenary to be the nicest and most charming person on the block, because that's not what he's getting paid for (which he doesn't, more often than not).

What people were rude to him (besides Barret for plot reasons)? I feel like I am missing something here

(Anonymous) 2020-05-21 06:59 am (UTC)(link)
The lady who rented out the room. Several of the shopkeepers. This was especially grating at the beginning when Tifa basically wanted him to threaten people into giving her money for sometimes faulty water filters but kept admonishing him to be nice at the same time. She generally kept doing that even when he just... didn't say much which isn't exactly being rude. Several of the people giving out quests were also pretty entitled anout it.

Yeah, I know the joke is that "everyone wants to fuck Cloud" but jfc did they need to be so overt about it? He was uncomfortable, and I was really uncomfortable.

I used to be a big bi!Cloud multishipper, but now I only ship Barret/Cloud (which I didn't really before, interestingly) because god at least Barret didn't shove himself up in Cloud's space and make shit weird. Ugh.

It's really weird how a lot of people have this double standard. What would be unacceptable behavior and unacceptable to be celebratory of if it was a female character (even if it was just one scene of such a thing happening people would be discussing it and condemning it) it's perfectly fine if it's a guy! Like, if it's wrong to do then it's wrong to do regardless if it's a girl or a guy it's happening to.

It's just creepy to me that it's never treated as a real problem either by canon or by the fandom at large. FFS the dudes already traumatized and has fantasy cancer give him a fucking break.

I get Jessie, because I was a theater kid and even my ace ass was all in on performative sexuality. I mean, it's not cool that she's making Cloud uncomfortable, but I have known SO MANY Jessies. Everyone else is like my god. Give the guy some breathing room and lay off! He's doing fine. He's bashing the thing.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-21 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
tbh this is how I feel. I get Jessie and my vibe was that Cloud was kinda digging it from her too. (I realize this is a doomed ship for so many reasons but tbh I really like their dynamic and ship it anyway.)

But he's so horrifically uncomfortable with everyone else that it's just uuuuugh. Leave the poor guy alone.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-21 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
He was not even a little digging it, imo. He constantly pushed her away and reacted with annoyance at best.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-21 09:41 am (UTC)(link)
Good thing he isn't real and can be interpreted in different ways that are both valid due to neither being able to confirm or deny how he really felt about it due to not having felt any real way about it due to not being real.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-21 01:50 pm (UTC)(link)
While this is true, pushing someone away unhappily why they make advances on you is generally considered a pretty hard and fast no. That isn't really something that's up for "interpretation". Maybe someone could write a fanfic where in their story he reciprocates.

But "saying no to a sexual advance is open to interpretation" is like...hmmm. Not good. And I doubt you would say the same if it was a female character pushing a guy away when he hit on her.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-21 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
See, I also was a theatre kid and knew girls like that. Andthe way they behaved was just as shitty. Like, the shit they pulled would have gotten male students in major trouble for sexual harrassment. Just because they're used to getting away with it or even conditioned into doing it doesn't make it okay.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-21 01:53 pm (UTC)(link)
The "ha ha sexual harassment and not taking no for an answer is funny and okay when girls do it" attitude needs to die once and for all.

I wish people would stop presenting uncomfortable situations like these for laughs/fan service regardless of the genders involved.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-21 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
The amount of times Cloud physically backed away from Jessie and Aerith made me side eye the game a bit. There’s a level of aggressiveness there I wasn’t entirely comfortable with. Idk.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-21 01:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with you. If Cloud was a girl people would be boycotting the game for it. Or at the very least not treating all this shit like fan service or whatever. It's like they practically salivate over him being pushed around in situations like these and it's honestly creepy because they don't even recognize that they're coercive. Don't know if I'm wording all that right.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-21 03:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I definitely set the remote down for a minute just staring at the screen when I realized Aerith had set up an obstacle course outside the bedroom door so he couldn’t leave. I’m always hesitant to criticize anything about the character because her fans can be intense, but a lot of her “quirkiness” Really rubbed me the wrong way.

Grain of salt here as I am still in Midgar, played OG twice.
IMO yes, the remake made me feel particularly sad for how pitiful he generally is - something that was clear even in OG through its script but I guess facial expressions helps driving the point across, also his pretty/feminine face adds a whole other layer of "they're pulling that girl's hair because they like her ...?" in a sense. But, at least until now, I didn't see anything particularly forceful. Sure Aerith was pretty ... Uh... *Yeah*, but Jessie? She was talking to her friends about how the new guy is cute, mostly. I don't ship it at all but I don't think Cloud felt any more uncomfortable than a *deep sigh!* either.

On the other hand Aerith has always been my Best Girl in games OVERALL and yes the remake makes me think she is almost too risque. Yes, it was there in the OG but it could be easily perceived as playfulness on her part. But now I think she is sometimes simply bullying Cloud which is why I never shipped CloTi in the first place, and it makes me wanna drop this ship too. It's also unclear if he reciprocates and he might... Still, not my thing. (When she remarks he looks great in the dress despite his obvious discomfort?... All the more power for canon les. Leave the guy alone smh.)

Again, grain of salt, but.
