I wasn't grossed out by Rika/Terada either or by Ritsuka/Soubi from Loveless when I was younger. I recently rewatched Loveless and wondered what the hell was wrong with preteen me.

Fandom also has the advantage of a culture of tagging and warning for things that helps to contextualize the story and let the reader know the author is aware xyz is bad and that their writing isn't an endorsement and that the reader should think so too.

I love stories that explore really fucked up things but I do agree they should probably stay in the niche market as a wide audience just doesn't deal with such things very well at all.

That said I don't think Rin and Sesshomaru will be canon. It'll probably end up some random character we've never heard of did the dirty with him instead.

AYRT

Oh fuck, I forgot about Loveless, that's deeply disturbing too in retrospect. That recent secret about Yami No Matsuei currently has me digging into old content and it's alarming to me how popular Tsuzuki/Hisoka is considering one is 26 and the other is 16. And then there's Roy/ED, which involves a 28 year old man with a 15 year old who is also his subordinate so the power dynamic is even more fucked.

Man, fandom used to hype up really uncomfortable shit that I never had a second thought about when I was a kid. Though again, I see Loveless as being more reprehensible considering its age gap pairing was canon and normalized by the creator, not just yaoi fangirls going wild in their niche circles.
