I actually disagree with this. It is mostly cultural how much of an empathetic base you start with, and circumstantial how much is developed beyond that. I actually think its hard for humans as a species to see big picture, non-immediate harm and make sound moral judgments based on what is usually an incomplete understanding of what harm is too much. Add to that that hell is just a manifestation of our deep fear of the earth and its power and its constantly shifting nature? It's just a structure for cultural moral judgment like any other structure for cultural moral judgment, and most people do need some type of structure to develop good praxis. I don't that means humans are inherently assholes and I'm not sure its useful to believe that either. But I am saying that hell as a concept is not really what's stopping people from being assholes. It's merely the structure of moral judgment that allows them to avoid daily examinations of harm analysis. I'm not saying I would recommend religion but its anthropological value isn't nothing.
Most cultural things are bullshit, their value is not diminished by being made-up, it's determined by what positives their construct brings to society. Religion brings a ton of bad and some good, both effects of which are replicated by cultural replacements which suggests something about humanity that I think people ignore because religion has been and is SO SO BAD
Really surprised Jen Gardner was in this movie considering how many low-key conservative movies she makes.
