<i>My mom<i/i> gave me the first Clan of the Cave Bear to read in <i>third grade</i>. To be fair, I don’t think she‘d managed to read the whole thing herself, and she thought I’d like the survival in the wilderness bits because I was obsessed with Island of the Blue Dolphins, My Side of the Mountain, and similar books, and would read absolutely anything if I was bored.

The rape didn’t phase me at all; I knew rape was bad so it was just a bad thing that happened to the main character. No, what made me stop reading was the cannibalism where the priests eat the slain warrior’s brain.
