The drama was over 70% past plot which knocked the general balance off course.
I do agree the the Yi City arc as too long, but it was too long in the drama as well compared to everything else. I think that arc is too long in every adaption.

nayrt But the past plot gave context and helped build up their relationship in the present, didn't it?

I do think the past plot is very important, yes. But the way the drama did it, it was more like the past being the only thing that mattered and the development of their relationship in the present was more of an afterthought. I do think both versions have their own issues but imo, what I liked about the novel - the kinda detective plot in the present- got the short end of the stick in the drama while some past events where needlessly stretched.

In general, I do believe that someone who already watched the drama wouldn't need to read the novel but having read the novel first, some of the things the censorship adds and takes away just don't sit well with me.
