Are they saying that to your face, or in their own spaces but you're seeing it because small fandom? Because if it's in your face, then you have all the right to tell them to back down. Even if not, small fandom spaces are still different from huge ones and everyone should be slightly more considerate.

They've said it to me. Both in chat and in comments.

About saying something, the problem for ME is that if you say shut up and write it yourself (but, you know, nicer) and they huff off then...there's no small fandom. You know?

Yeah, that's kinda the problem with small fandoms. Everyone should be more considerate because every participant can be an important contributor in some ways, but when someone isn't, they can easily trample over everyone else's hard work.

i think this is a reasonable frustration.

tho if they are not being mean about it, they might not realize that they are saying something that's bothering you rather than just striking up conversation about what they like in a fandom so small only two people are writing? i think it's fine if you tell them you don't want comments like that under your actual fic. it's just their own luck you write any pairing they like at all~

(Anonymous) 2020-05-23 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, some of them are comments on the fic that were like "well, this isn't (pair), but I gave it a chance anyway and it's good (and so on).

It is frustrating, but just putting it out there helped.

oooof bigtime. the shitty backhanded compliment. fandom collectively needs to shed that habit - it's not actually a compliment if you say "well it would have been better if..."

no. those people are shitty and that's not how you praise something you liked. at the worst I will accept "I'm not usually into X/Y but that was great" because it sounds more like someone genuinely isn't into your pairing or your fandom but tried it and liked it because you're just that good. that's a compliment.

I feel you that it's harder to call out that sort of shit in smaller fandoms or small rarepair circles. what can you do besides grit your teeth and save the eye-rolling for behind their backs.

I don't blame you for feeling this way. It's immensely annoying when people who clearly never contribute to any form of fandom content complain. Especially when people try to pull that passive aggressive thing where they try to guilt people into making a particular type of content.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-23 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
That sounds really annoying, OP.

I'd respond at face value honestly. "I like X/Y but I'm really into y/z, a/w and trope h right now, so I'm having a good time exploring those!"

im betting while most of it is just rudeness, some of it is people afraid that what they're into isn't going to be your focus. I'd be forthright about branching out.

Oh boy, do I know that feeling!

Back when I was writing only in my first language and posting in an archive specifically for fics in that language, I got into Sherlock and wrote a Sherlock/John/Lestrade story. The fandom was not that popular in our particular archive, and everything was Johnlock and/or Mystrade, so I knew my fic wouldn't be that popular but I didn't expect the comments I got.

Most of them were the sort of "I usually prefer Johnlock/Mystrade but this was good too", but I got one that was literally "Goddddd! I wanted Johnlock, I don't want Lestrade shoved in there with them!" in all caps like I had tricked them or something when I had very clearly tagged the threesome.
