There are versions where he does that? Like is he making a distinction between that and other close relationships (mentor, teacher etc)? Or like is it "no i am not dad, you all were merely tools for my purposes whom i love to death and would never sacrifice your well-being for that revenge no matter what i say" which is like meant to be incredible?

In Turtles Forever there is a crossover of the universes where one set have father/son type interactions and the other set have mentor/student interactions and it's discussed. They're both pretty wholesome relationships. He's strict but he cares about them.

oooh, thanks that clears it up a bit. and i think i agree with OP. if you're the only person responsible for someone's development, i don't think you can avoid being a parent, lol.
