The jokes are made at the expense of the Axis powers, and even then it's never about the death and killing. The kind of jokes they make are about how Italy retreats faster than he advances, and how Germany is constantly dragged down because he has to support Italy all the time. There's no 'lolololol nazis' or anything. In fact, they haven't even MENTIONED nazis yet. (Or Jewish people, for that matter. But there wasn't really an Israeli state back then, so they couldn't really have a character, could they?)

I've seen a few fanarts featuring the Jewish people/Israel (concerning a certain historical event in Shanghai), but they all seemed to handle the situation properly.

Yeah, they do bring historical figures in sometimes. One recent comic had King Henry the 8th in it, even. But I more mean as a reoccurring character.

...Wait, so, in order to be considered tasteless and wrong or offensive or whatever... it has to involve the Holocaust? I really do not understand this at all. "HAHA It's okay to make light of the war as long as you aren't touching THIS ONE PART OF IT, the rest of it is fiiiiiiiiine." Um how?

No, that's not what I'm saying at all. If you have problems with something making fun of any war, then that's fine. But one war in particular should not be held above all others as untouchable. The secret only protested the WW2 content, so that's why I said something.

I get that, but it's just, the way you worded it in your first comment made it sound like you were saying it's okay because lolol no nazis yet. And it'd be one thing if it was just you, but there was another comment on I think... page one that said, "At least it's not poking fun at the Holocaust" or something to that effect, and I just. Don't get that. It's not the one war being held above all others as untouchable, it's just this one part of the war.

Not all fans are the same, though. While I personally feel that it's all or nothing, there are definitely people out there who think that it is okay as long as it's not poking fun at the holocaust. And I have a gripe with them too, because it's stupid to say that one thing is sacred while everything else isn't. I think we're agreeing on this, just coming at it from different angles.

Germany could have been a character that during the WWII strips (and WHY is there only focus on WWII anyways when there were also comics about WWI, Austrian Succession Wars, American Revolution, Sealand being sold on EBay etc) would go around killing massive amounts of 'lesser human beings' and being a complete douchebag. But the author didn't do this. Being able to avoid that surprised me. Instead, he made it like Germany is being forced to obey a terrible ruler. He represents the people of Germany who were stuck under the rule, forced to go to war, etc. This depiction, while completely open to debate, is at least a really unique viewpoint of the situation. It was never made to 'make light' of it. I think Hidekaz knows that everyone knows shit happened. There's not point for it in the WWII comics.

Also, isn't a lot of this "making light of WWII" stuff a lot like the comic Maus, possibly one of the most telling comics about a man and his family going through the Holocaust? Apparently that also 'made light of' WWII since the characters were mice, cats, and dogs. It is actually quite disturbing. Just because it's a comic doesn't mean it's taking it lightly. >_>

I think I forgot my point. And I don't think this was just directed at you. I just... don't find it offensive or taken lightly at all. And people at hetalia always bring up these conversations when the comics are scanlated.

I have never seen anyone make that criticism of Maus - which is not to say they don't exist, just that the vast majority of reviewers feel the same way about the book that you do. Anyway, I think comparing Hetalia to Maus is a bit silly - Maus is a drama, and despite the anthropomorphic animals it is an attempt to address the Holocaust with grace and gravity. Hetalia is a cute gag strip with some incidental drama.

Anyway, I think people focus on the WWII part since the series is called Axis Powers Hetalia. It has a specific focus on the moefied Axis Powers.
