This isn't aimed at you, OP, so much as it is in response to some of the comments I've seen made about this:

Why is it okay for the series to poke fun at and make light of WWII as long the Holocaust isn't mentioned?

Don't know about the rest of the commenters here, but Hetalia is about *military* fuckups more than the civilian tragedies of WWII (and other eras in general), and that's why the holocaust or the atomic bombings are hardly mentioned. It's not making it "more okay" as much as the comic recognizes that some jokes are classified as "TOO SOON, *TOO SOON!!*", which I dig a lot. It has it's own brand of respect for history.

Yes, but there's a reason WWII was seen as a war unlike any other before it, because so much of the deaths were civilians on a massive scale. While people DO still die either way, there's a separation between military (where the risks are known to you) and innocent stander-bys (people who have nothing to do with the frontlines in an immediate sense). So making jokes about military failures in APH (like, say, the premise it's based on: how Italy was a military burden on Germany more than anything else) versus making jokes of the holocaust (which is *not funny* no matter how you slice it), it makes an immense difference.

I don't think it's farfetched or unreasonable that most people make the distinction between military vs civilian tragedies. Just ask around, you'll find people do separate it. Whether this is sick or stupid or heartless or just plain human is up to the individual to decide.

probably because the Holocaust = civilians being killed for no reason and general war = soldiers killing each other. and from the few strips I've read, the series focuses on the nations, not the actual soldiers and killing. (for example, Germany never being able to do anything because Italy keeps eating pasta and crying)

I don't even read Hetalia and this wank is annoying me. lighten up.

Because we're talking about a carefully planned and executed elimination of thousands of people. Yeah, in a war there are always civilian casualities, and it wasn't the first attempt at ethnic/racial "cleaning" in history, but the sheer scale and cold effectiveness of the Holocaust made it different than everything that came before. Civilians being caught in a fight or being in the wrong place at the wrong time is one thing - it is a tragedy but it's something that's been part of every war since the beginning of time. Civilians being herded onto wagons and sent to the slaughterhouse is a completely different thing.
