115. Fight da powah.

131. It's like Ranma and Ryouga. The fact that Inuyasha's English VA also voiced Ranma in the later episodes doesn't help.

139. I guess you shouldn't watch Hogan's Heroes, then?

149. And yet, that's what I love ebout the show. lol

139. I do have to admit Hogan's Heroes makes me feel conflicted, mostly because I feel really sorry for Klink some of the time.

On the one hand, fictional. On the other hand, Nazi.

I meant the laughing part, but yeah.

Well, that too. They do have a few serious parts, though; Operation Briefcase had a lot of grim bits.

Dude, if you really want to feel conflicted about sympathetic Nazis...watch Das Untergang. All about the last days of Hitler's life and the fall of Berlin. I wouldn't say it treats Hitler sympathetically (just made me think about how pathetic a human being he really was) but it does make you feel sorry for all those poor bastards fighting and dying to the last man for a man who couldn't care less if they lived or died.

You want conflict? Did ya know, the guy who played Klink (Werner Klemperer) was Jewish. (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0459252/bio)

So was John Banner, who played Schultz. (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0052308/bio)

And the guy who played LeBeau (Robert Clary). He was also a holocaust survivor. (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0165145/bio)

I used to love this show when I was a kid. These guys are real examples of the endurance of the human spirit, taking something horrendous and giving the finger to it, using it to heal(laughter) and moving on.

Re: 115, 131, 139, 149

[identity profile] nest.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Me too. ♥ I actually wrote Robert Clary a fan letter when I was 12 or so, because I really admired his work on the show. I can't imagine how painful that time period was for them, since all three of them were affected by those atrocities in some way or another, and yet they were able to, as you said, use laughter to heal and move on.

Oh, I definitely knew that--so were a few other of the Nazis' actors. But I doubt Mr. Klemperer actively felt bad when Klink gets into another mess.

Hogan's Heroes dealt with fictional individuals, not the countries personified. And it also sucked ass. (The movie Stalag 17 was great, though.)

Re: 139

[identity profile] revulo.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
I was pointing out the similarity of it also poking fun at WWII (not the war itself, but what happened within the war).

Also it sucked ass.
What does it being good or not have to do with anything?

[identity profile] nest.livejournal.com 2008-11-30 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Stole the words right out of my mouth. xDD I actually enjoyed Hogan's Heroes, and consider Hetalia to be in the same vein, anthropomorphic countries or not. Even if the characters are personified countries, at the end of the day they have enough distinct personality quirks and traits to where I'd consider them fictional characters in their own right. They're all modeled more after silly stereotypes than specific people who actually exist in history. I can see why it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea, but I'm kind of surprised at how genuinely upset some people are about it.

Re: 139

[identity profile] revulo.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
I also can see why it can upset someone, yes. I wasn't making a smart-alecky remark when I said that. Just pointing out that it's been done already.

Re: 139

[identity profile] nest.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I wasn't thinking you were being smart-alecky. It has been done already, and doubly so when you think about stuff like M*A*S*H. I guess I'm surprised at how some people are saying something like Hogan's Heroes is okay while Hetalia isn't. If anything, Hogan's Heroes was far more insensitive to its time, considering it came out only 20 years after the war ended, and involves a POW camp, something which some former POWs didn't really appreciate during its initial run. (Interestingly, one of the main actors on Hogan's Heroes was a holocaust survivor. I'm not sure how many people are aware of that.)

But, LOL, I know you were just making an observation. Sorry for the babbling.

HAHA I totally mentioned Hogan's Heroes in my reply too. I loved that show. ♥
