Obviously you've illustrated that you can be a bitch because you disagree with my opinion by throwing stupid epithets at me like "elitist," so in other words, it takes one to know one.

I believe that calling someone an "elitist" because they think Hetalia is dumb and an unreliable account of WWII is petty and childish. Also, that fangirls need to come up with a different epithet to throw at people who don't share their opinions.

*calms down*

[identity profile] dropsofgleam.livejournal.com 2008-11-30 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Hm... I used the wrong word, then. My point was more by the lines that, from what I could see, you assumed that ALL the Hetalia fans were drawn in ONLY for the cute guys and the slash, when in fact it's not. Several of us APH fans are more into it since it pokes fun at national stereotypes of all kinds, not just for the pretty boys or the yaoi. And others are also History fans who think it's, well, a rather curious way to see it.

So yeah, "elitism" wasn't the best word (damn English being just my second language). Still not happy about what I perceive as huge and incorrect generalizations about a whole fandom. =/

No, I think the part where you insisted people could only properly learn history through books, and that anyone who gets some historical facts from a comic every once in awhile clearly doesn't read, that part was pretty elitist. Why not accept it? As an outsider looking through the comments you've made ITT, I can think of at least a few worse epithets people could certainly have thrown at you.

Ask a historian, they'll tell you that's pretty much the only way to learn. Videos make good supplements, as do lectures, but you have to read books to learn history. This is pretty much the same as a cook saying you have to cook to learn how to cook. It's not elitist, it's the fucking truth.

TL;DR you're an idiot.

Of course if you want the whole filling, you could read a history book, but it doesn't mean you can't learn something from Hetalia either. In fact, Hetalia is doing for me now what Carmen Sandeigo did for me years ago, get interested in history again. Hetalia should near the same level as those "100 Facts You Didn't Know About (Insert Historical Event)" books. Heck, for all we know, the author may be a history major himself.

Honestly I get a good laugh when I see events I learned back in my school years "Hetalia-ized".

My, what a charmer. And tell me, exactly why is there some sort of rule that everyone must have a vested interest in deeply perusing the annals of history? Most non-majors get the theme park version for cocktail parties, and that's all they really need for most of their lives. And majors can supplement their studies with fun extra materials, you admitted it yourself. If you still can't recognize your own elitism and self-contradiction at this point what more can I tell you?

For my part, I accept that most people I meet on the street have probably never in their lives cracked open a philosophy text, but if they wish to read up some summaries on Wikipedia just to make conversation, I applaud the effort. If you get your nose out of the textbooks once in a while, you might not always be so shrill and unpleasant -- and on the Internet, no less.

^_^ Actually, primary sources are where it's at. Books are much more useful for historiography than for history.
