Yeah, apparently everyone thinks that the Japanese version of WWII is reliable, which is the really unsettling part.

You're telling me. They barely acknowledge that the war happened, let alone that their government and military was culpable and directly responsible for various war crimes.

Adding a detail (also in complete agreement), apparently some Japanese history textbooks a few years ago skipped over their brutal abuse of the Chinese during WWII, but were thankfully caught on the subject. I don't know much about Hetalia, but WWII is never ever going to be funny.

Or cute. Damn.

And these fucking fangirls are deluding themselves if they really want me to believe they're in it for anything other than slash.

Some of us aren't in it for the slash. :| I don't participate in the fandom and don't read it with any regularity, but honestly, knowing as much about the actual events as I do, I can see the humour AND the shortcomings where some uneducated fangirl will never really get it.

I read it because I already have my SRS BZNS World War II fandoms and interests. Even with the sheer amount of crack that can go on in one of them, there's always the rather crushing realisation at the end of even the funniest fic, that a good number of the people involved are still dead in the end and that nothing can ever change that. It makes reading Alternate Universe fic even worse, sometimes.

So why don't you stop being such a fucking pissant? Oh no, there are people out there who are amused by and enjoy something that's not very historically accurate and takes a serious subject lightly. This is horrible and bad and that must mean that anyone who is actually a fan is just in it for the slash!

Not everyone copes with tragedy like you do. I knew a girl who right after the 11 September attacks was making a lot of morbid and stupid jokes because that was how she coped with great tragedy, by trying to lighten the mood. Admittedly, she picked the wrong time and place, making those jokes in front of another girl who was afraid she would never see a few members of her family again, but beyond that, she did nothing wrong. It stands to reason that there are people out there who deal with the horrors of the first half of the 20th century by simplifying things and making jokes.

Besides, if that comic motivates even one person to actually learn more about history (although I may be the only person motivated to research because of even a comic), then it cannot be all that bad.

You may want to read this essay. It sums things up far better than I ever could. (http://www.punkednoodle.com/champloo/index.php/2008/09/07/walking-the-thin-line-between-humor-and-oppression-axis-powers-hetalia/)

So.... why are you telling me this? I still think it's shit.

Re: 139

[identity profile] trustyoursins.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 09:50 am (UTC)(link)
Probably because of the smug superiority in your "and these fucking fangirls are deluding themselves if they really want me to believe they're in it for anything other than slash" comment?

The sad thing about you and the one other person I've seen agreeing with the OP is that all three of you somehow seem to think "Japan" is some amorphous blob of people who must all be blamed for an atrocity that happened decades ago, and that no individual Japanese person can approach the subject of WWII with anything less than shame, deep bowing and repeated apologies, because they happen to be Japanese and their country has dealt with what happened shamefully. Japan itself as a country and a government =/= every single Japanese person.

Re: 139

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Why not? People stereotype me for being an American all the fucking time. And most of the time the shit they say about Americans is 100% dead on.

Re: 139

[identity profile] trustyoursins.livejournal.com 2008-12-02 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Whoa wait, what? It's not a contest, and hurtful stereotypes aren't some sort of revenge. If you've been negatively stereotyped, you should know how shitty it is. And again, you cannot say that most American stereotypes are 100% dead on for all Americans, either! And surely, surely you should know that there is a difference between a small stereotype like "all Americans are loud!" or "all Asians are good with computers!" and thinking that all Japanese people are unrepentant and unapologetic about the torture and murder of countless people. That would be like saying that all Americans thought the Iraq war was a great idea and are totally against pulling out even now, just because our government is handling it idiotically. It's completely not the case, and it just shows not even just ignorance, but also an insulting lack of interest in seeing human beings as individuals instead of lumps of faceless cliche.

If you get hurtfully stereotyped, the solution isn't to stereotype back just to make it even. And even stereotypes and cliches that have some, or a lot, of truth to them can't be held as 100% true across the board.

Re: 139

[identity profile] baranohanayome.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
I just started reading it a couple of days ago. I can truthfully state that I'm not into it for the slash--I'm into it because the personification of my country is an obnoxious little bastard, and I find it hilarious. "I'll the the hero!" indeed.

Re: 139

[identity profile] vikki.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. Didn't even know I liked Hetalia slash, but I guess I must because you say so.

Still, you do make a good point re: Japanese version of WWII. I read Hetalia warily, waiting for just that. (The guy who writes it lives in NYC, actually. So.) Nothing so far. I'm kind of impressed.

Re: 139

[identity profile] and-socanyou.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
I can't even tell what you're getting at with this comment. Hetalia is definitely not the Japanese version of WWII. Granted, I'm not Japanese, but I'm pretty sure Japanese history books don't teach that the countries are anthropomorphic bishounen.

And it's not like the series doesn't make fun of Japan. He's the butt of plenty of jokes.
