Guess what: I'm Jewish. My family on both sides got killed in concentration camps. The survivors fled to America, where they were poor as shit and had to struggle from a day to day basis because they lost everything as a result of the war. But you know what? I can recognize the fact that Hetalia isn't going, "LOOK AT YOU YOUR SUFFERING MEANS NOTHING HAHAHAHAHAHAHA" and read it and get a little laugh out of it. Seriously, maybe two comics out of the entire thing touch on WWII at all.

Maybe you could learn to differentiate between a silly little webcomic and a personal attack.

You =/= everyone. Sometimes people are offended by things and they can't help it. Recognize this. Get over it. Enjoy your comic.

I can't forget about it. And the lack of respect of pain is so unbelievable to me. What has this turned you all into?!

No, they're telling you to get over the fact there is a silly comedy that devotes only like a few strips on a war during the downtime when they aren't fighting to tell little tidbits that most people won't know that doesn't even disrespect the pain of those who died in such horrific fashion.

Hell, for all you know the author could be a descendant of someone who die in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which was equally horrific because so many innocents died there too. I know my country doesn't like to delve into that when making their 2837464648th WW2 movie.

Hetalia isn't trying to make war look fun, it's not saying it's okay.

I do ignore the comic, but fans like you draw me in and make me comment.

By the way, most of the time when someone says they like the comic, they don't have naysayers at their throats. Which is probably why the secret is in a secrets community in the first place. But as soon as someone speaks up and says they don't like it, they get hit full in the face with OH LIGHTEN UP IT'S JUST A FUN SILLY HARMLESS COMIC LOL.

The secret didn't say, "I don't like this comic." The secret said, "I AM ASHAMED THAT THERE ARE PEOPLE OUT THERE WHO ENJOY THIS COMIC AND IT MAKES ME SAD TO BE A HUMAN BEING BAWWWWWWWW." So, yeah. People are going to get irritated by that.

I think it's great you can laugh at it. Whatever. Different strokes.

You fail to see the issue- I don't think it's funny, and people are saying 'you have a problem- lighten up'. Being told to lighten up when experiencing pain invalidates your experience of pain and glosses over what you are feeling. You might say "I'm sorry you feel what way, I, too, felt pain, let's acknowledge that this affects us in different ways." Fine.
But "Bawww?" "Lighten up?" That's like saying 'it never happened'. Like saying to a rape victim 'It was just sex, wasn't it?"

Funny how I had to validate my pain experience as well. Would it be less valid if someone who felt pain at the losses and brutalities incurred in war was complaining?

I just fail to see how Hetalia is personally attacking anybody for whatever pain they may have experienced as a result of WWII. The extent that the comic talks about WWII is to go, "Italy retreats very easily!" Literally. That's it. I'm not trying to invalidate the suffering that you and your family has experienced as a result of WWII. I think that people are saying "lighten up" because people are getting ridiculously offended over a comic that hasn't done half the shit that they're accusing it of doing.

It's not Hetalia... it's anon and the commenters on this post that were doing it by saying 'lighten up'. Possibly that's reading comprehension fail on my part for not understanding where the 'lighten up' was directed to for which I apologise.
However, the attitude unearthed in response by some of the commenters prove that sadly, acknowledging that war doesn't end when one side surrenders is still an ongoing process.

I think what it comes down to is that the secret was worded pretty dickishly, people got irritated and posted comments that were worded pretty dickishly, and HELLO WANKSTORM. I, for my part, apologize for probably being a little more dickish on my part than was warranted. I agree that there are idiots out there who aren't going to acknowledge the pain and suffering that occurred during WWII, but I don't think Hetalia is really a culprit of that.

What anon up there said. From what I could see, it was less "lighten up about the Holocaust" and more "don't insult ALL the fandom just because you don't like it". At least originally, before the shit hit the fan.

And yeah, if I myself was a bitch, I'm not exactly proud of it either. =/

I think the 'lighten up' aren't aimed at your emotions toward WWII. I think they are aimed at the fact that you find a comic offensive. The key word is comic. It's not meant to be taken seriously.

I will second this opinion with my own Jewish Holocaust-survivor-descendent cred!

Seconded. I don't actually read Hetalia, but that's not because I'm OMG OFFENDED by it, it's because I read too many other webcomics and don't have time to start a new one. My grandfather was tortured by the Nazi-controlled police when he was FIFTEEN for being Jewish, but that doesn't mean I have a grudge against the entire country of Romania for doing so! (Actually, I really want to go there.) And while my grandfather didn't like to talk about that period of time (funnily enough), he could still remember his Romanian childhood fondly. I DON'T think he'd be offended by Hetalia. (Is Romania even in it?)
