Oh no, I'm so hurt by the harsh words of someone who thinks Naruto is superior reading material to The Great Gatsby!! ^_________^

Re: 101

(Anonymous) 2008-12-01 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
What about, like, thinking Mushishi is superior reading material to Twilight?

Because, as with anything, a literary medium doesn't define the quality of its content! Brilliant.

Re: 101

[identity profile] immoral-cascade.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, yes, I made a sweeping generalization. I know, don't worry.

Honestly? There are really good manga, there are really good books. I think people shouldn't enjoy one over the other, but, I think there's something sad when someone can only enjoy a book when it has pictures all through it.

Re: 101

(Anonymous) 2008-12-01 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
XD As long as you knew as you did it.

It's possible that there are other factors, like preferring some of the genre-specific techniques/story commonalities etc, but ...I'd guess that these people probably never found the LITERARY genres they could go with and think it's all, well, American Novels 101 or something :/

Re: 101

[identity profile] immoral-cascade.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
♥~ x3

It's difficult to say, really. :\ There are a lot of boring books toted about as the 'best' of the genre, and if people get into it with something like that it kinda ruins it, so I can see it.

I don't think people who prefer manga are stupid, I just think they're really limiting themselves and losing a lot of insight they could gain. As lame as it is, the reading I've done in my life has dramatically changed the way I look at things, and how I conduct myself. And I believe that people who haven't had the chance for that to happen are lacking something.

Re: 101

(Anonymous) 2008-12-01 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
I should mention that I'm a different Anon from the ^____^ one. I just saw the Naruto-Gatsby comment and had a sudden pressing need to rein that in. (ACTUALLY I KEEP THINKING YOU HAVE AWESOMER TASTES THE MORE ICONS YOU USE but taht is neither here nor there).

Yeah, exactly. I mean, I made it through a hell of a lot of english lit in my time ([waves cane]) and I swear if I'd had to start with some of those books I can see why I could get bitter. (Actually, our American Novels prof hated his entire class -- he was American, we were Canadian, and the point of the Great Gatsby just never seemed to ring with us the way he wanted it to). Fortunately, my parents highly encouraged reading so I got to grow up on awesome stuff. I also agree that it's sad if people haven't had the chance for that to happen, seriously -- I can't disagree with that point at all. Just the one comparing one of the most "entertainment-only" manga to one of the most "high literature" novels and treating that as a comeback. (Sorry but it really did bug me. *g*)

Re: 101

[identity profile] immoral-cascade.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, I figured that out, you've got a different style of writing. And it's okay, you can admit you just wanted to start an internet-fight. :) ♥

Truthfully, the only reason I used Naruto and The Great Gatsby was because they were the first that came to mind~. But I actually really used to be into Naruto, and I loved The Great Gatsby, so I don't know what exactly I was saying about myself. xD

You know, I never really thought about how other cultures would see American literature. It makes sense, though, that something like Gatsby wouldn't click as well, since it really is all about the 'American dream' and all that other crap.

:( I feel like I would like to friend you, but you are anonymous~.

Okay, you caught me. *g*

I used to be pretty into Naruto myself at one time but, oh god, how it went on and on. I think I gave up about that filler arc with the race.

He got so pissed at us, honstly. He was all "Don't you understand! The green light means money!" "And?" "And that's why they want it so much!" "..." "OH GOD FUCKING CANADIANS."

Hi. :)

I don't think people who prefer manga are stupid, I just think they're really limiting themselves and losing a lot of insight they could gain.

Because preferring one thing over the other means you don't like the other?

I like manga and books, but I have a thing for the visual arts, so on that count, as a general rule, I prefer manga to books. I still love books, and read books. If I become a fan of a book, I generally trawl around for fanart. Because I like it. I'm in book mode at the moment because I can't afford manga D:

I could understand all this 'limiting' stuff if some one said they only read comics/manga, but then, surely the reverse can said to be true. There are many beautiful, clever and meaningful stories to be found in manga (and probably other comic mediums too.) Surely all these people who won't touch manga are missing out as well?

Re: 101

[identity profile] immoral-cascade.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm taking the argument to the extreme end of the spectrum. :) Hyperbole tends to come out quite frequently. But anyway, it's based along the ideas that if you (general you) prefer one medium to the other, you would tend to only stay in that medium, and therefore your reluctance to read a book would make you lose out on a lot of great things. Of course, there are always people that enjoy both, but I don't think that's who the secret-maker was really talking about.

And the reverse is always true, I'm not denying that. I think both are viable ways of telling a story. More than likely, there are actually more people that are missing out on what comics can give them than there are people missing out on what books can. And then again, in America there's just a good chance that half the country doesn't read at all, so what can you do?

Personally, the books I've read have always had a stronger effect on my life than the manga I've read. But I'm very much geared towards language rather than visuals, so I suppose that's to be expected. x3 Sorry if this doesn't make much sense, I'm tired right now.

Re: 101

(Anonymous) 2008-12-01 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Because obviously all comics are as stupid as Naruto, and all books are as intelligent as The Great Gatsby!

Brilliant!

^-- Anon above

I admit I lol'd at how we both just. Ended that.

Yes, this is clearly the truth, glad we've got that out of the way.

Re: 101

The Great Gatsby sucked. :\ Hard.

Re: 101

You suck. Harder.

Re: 101

[identity profile] vaguely.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
Just the title 'The Great Gatsby' makes me cream my literary pants. But how did you get through it without pictures and little *'s by Gatsby's eyes so you'd know he was upset?

Re: 101

[identity profile] immoral-cascade.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
It was a trial everyday, let me tell you. Oh, if only I'd had some "^___^" to help me tell the difference between Angry!Gatsby and Happy!Gatsby.

But seriously, it's one of my favorite books. I'm glad to see other people that like it! :)

Re: 101

[identity profile] vaguely.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
For BOTH my 11th and 12th AP English tests, my free essay was on The Great Gatsby. I wrote about Daisy as a character and then about the green light, because the green light is my favorite literary thing ever. Possibly my favorite thing ever. And I got 5s on both of those tests (which is the highest, yay!)

And in case other people can't figure out what I just said:

GATSBY IS SO KAWAII. O.O'

Re: 101

[identity profile] immoral-cascade.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, I only got a four on my AP test, just took it my senior year. :( It was because I completely flaked on one of the essays, just couldn't get out what I wanted to say. I always ended up using Moby Dick or Great Expectations for my free essays, though.

In my class, we didn't talk about the green light a lot. xD We were reading The Hollow Men by T.S. Eliot at the same time, so we ended up paying a lot of attention to Gatsby's wasteland, and the moral decline of man and blah blah blah. :)

Re: 101

[identity profile] vaguely.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
I make up for my inability to do math by being a total loser dork when it comes to English. I never turned in my homework but I still got a perfect score on the Standards of Learning test that Virginia students have to take, and it made it really awkward when I got recognised in front of the school for it then turned around and got written up for not turning in an essay. School is for fools, kids. :P

Re: 101

[identity profile] bibulb.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
Wait a minute, you're championing The Great fucking Gatsby? REALLY?

I mean, shit. The damn thing BECAME the emptiness it portrayed. And I'll never get back that time I spent reading it.

Re: 101

[identity profile] immoral-cascade.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
I always really enjoyed it. And I used it because it was the first novel that came to mind.

Re: 101

Agreed.

Re: 101

*shrug* I hate Naruto. I also hate the shitty romance novels my mother reads. There are good and bad comics and there are good and bad books. I do read literature. I just enjoy graphic novels more.
