Sure, I'll take that. It is a bit rude to say "lighten up", but at the same time, it's also rude to tell people who like it that they're being insensitive to the issues for liking it. Not saying you are, but there are people who do. My dad's a history teacher, and he loves and respects history (reads historical non-fiction for fun, will talk about it with anyone and everyone, etc.), and I was raised with that same interest and respect (hard not to, when you're getting history lessons on a regular basis from the time you were young enough to understand). But we still joke about it and enjoy a good poke or satire. So it is possible to maintain a respect for history and enjoy something light and fluffy like Hetalia. As long as people are aware that wars and such aren't silly things, I think it's okay.

I can appreciate that. I have friends who are fans who know the history, I think you can make marvellous comedy and satire about warfare. I don't think that people who enjoy it aren't aware of this, like you say.

Possibly my comments about the content of Hetalia were made in righteous anger (><) though I still think that a comedy about war ought not to gloss over the horrors of it. Then again, it's a very Japanese sensibility to be as careful about these things as possible. That's not so much what I was offended by; I ought to clarify this. :)

I actually think it's more tasteful to gloss over the horrors, if we're talking comedy. It's better than making fun of the horrors, right? Hetalia avoids things like the Holocaust, Pearl Harbor, the Rape of Nanking, Kristellnacht, Concentration Camps, etc., focusing on lesser-known facts and foreign relations. I find Afghanis-tan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afghanis-tan) more controversial, because they actually address and trivialize events like 9.11.
