How do you explain the massive, slash-hungry fanbase of Fukumoto series, then? The art in his manga can be seriously fug--and I'm saying this as a diehard fan--and yet there are immense amounts of BL fangirls for his works. Art isn't necessarily indicative of what a fanbase likes.

No, but it certainly helps. I guarantee you that if this comic had more rugged character designs instead of the typical bishounen crap that even makes it difficult to to tell them apart, a good number of fans would lose interest.

...And I would probably gain interest. Oh dear.

Seriously, people please stop feeding this douche and just tell them face on that you do happen to like Hetalia for how it looks. Partly, if not entirely. Hey, I do. There's nothing wrong with that, especially if you claim to be reading the thing for entertainment.

This. I actually like the messiness of the art of Hetalia. It gives it a certain charm to it and it's not the uke-uke bishounen either (although the sweeping majority of characters are pretty bulky if you ignore their faces).

And there's nothing wrong if people get attracted to the art. Art pleasing to the eye is nice, although, to note, it doesn't guarantee that it will have a huge fandom either.

I, too, am a big fan of Fukumoto. But I think the fandom would be twice as big if the art was WAI WAI BISHONENS~~. I'm kind of glad it's not.

Fkmt fandom is awesome because the fugly art weeded out the shallow nutcase fangirls. Srsly, picture a fandom where for ever Third Wheel, there was five "Kaji Meets A Girl-- But Why Does She Haev Cat Ears And Wings??? LEMON LOL R&R Plzz". A fandom where for ever awesome Ginji/Morita porn piece, there were ten badly traced picutres of Kaiji and Sahara furries.
