Okay, SORRY for adding to the shitstorm, but OP, realize this:
Yes, you have been hurt. And yes, I'd be sorry, because it does touch a sensitive subject.
However, treating the whole fandom as superficial people?
Being of German origin and seeing how much the Germans have to REPENT/HATE THEMSELVES/FEEL SUICIDAL OHMYGOD even today, YES I want people to get over it. Forgive, but never forget; a nice motto, even though it's really hard to apply, I know.
And this comic is certainly a break from the serious part of history, poking fun at ANECDOTES and not war. It's not glossing out the, say, Holocaust, it's just that the suffering is not the series' point. There's a difference beween glossing out a ''non-desired'' part and just not including it in the subjects you treat, you know? Take the Cold War, for example. You want to focus on say, how differently were people's diet between the Soviet Union and Western Countries, and then people get butthurt because you didn't mention the SUFFERING of the, say, Vietnam war. Way to miss the entire fucking point, right?
And I personally love the fact that my country gets a break from all the OMG NAZI calls. In fact, if you didn't notice, it's meant to take a break. As much as I respect your feelings about it, you can't be MORTIFIED about this 24/7, right?
Sorry for this HORRIBLE rambling OP, but I hope you read this, to see a less, um, aggressive response. Peace, and just ignore the fandom, if that makes you feel better. It's better than creating drama over it and making you have to explain your personal reasons about it in LJ comments.

SORRY AGAIN FOR ADDING UP, WITH ALL MY RESPECT TO THE OP AND THAT FANDOM BAWWW.

It's not that I think Germany is evil, it's just the idea of mocking this part of history makes me uncomfortable. Making it be all about the 'wai wai country slash!' is even worse. It's like, will you guys flock to anything as long as it has cute boys in compromising circumstances?

Yesterday's secret was a good example. People just don't care how they come across in this fandom and it gets revolting to watch after a while.

Re: OP of 139

(Anonymous) 2008-12-01 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Personally, I'm not into slash and I'm not an obsessed anime or manga lover, but I like Hetalia, which did took me a while to get into. Just sayin' not everyone is into it because of pure slash or cute boys.

Re: OP of 139

(Anonymous) 2008-12-01 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
*take

The wank must have killed off a bit of my brain, sorry.

Re: OP of 139

(Anonymous) 2008-12-01 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
I never said everyone was into it because of those things, but that's the reason it's gotten popular. The number of people reading it for 'zomg one of the countries is molesting another country hurrrrr' exceeds those that are reading it for the brilliant historical insight or whatever other excuse people are giving for their interest.

Re: OP of 139

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Or it could've gotten popular because the Nations are likable character or the strip is actually funny. Unless you're God, I think you have no right to say what make a series popular because FYI, there are many slashable series with cute bishounen that go under the radar all the time.

If anything I see the fandom more into humor part than the slash part.

Re: OP of 139

(Anonymous) 2008-12-01 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
Unless you're God too, I don't think you get to decide what's funny either. The anime announcement put it on more people's radars, but if you think they're sticking around for the history lessons then you're crazy. I've seen the 4chan image threads and the kink meme and the Gaia thread. They're not talking about the War of 1812 and what that means for America's characterization, I can tell you that.

Re: OP of 139

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
Key word: "could've". I'm not saying I'm God, but being an somewhat active member of the community, I think I have a little more insight than you.

4chan is not a place for intellect debate, period... either is Gaia. In fact, having an intellectual debate in these place will only led to tears.

And I fail how a kink meme means anything, every fandom has one so everyone is in it for the sex? We can have our cake and eat it too, y'know. Actually, I like how some people put effort in that particular one in building a historic background. But it is no indication that the fandom only likes it for the BL, however.

Re: OP of 139

[identity profile] wanderingscribe.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
...So you basically went looking for shallowness, found it, and then judged an entire fandom to be shallow based on the information you found that affirmed your already biased opinion.

Wow. I really was right on in what I said, though I'm sure you're about as likely to move on as I'm able to defecate pink elephants.

Re: OP of 139

[identity profile] lolitsumi.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 11:20 am (UTC)(link)
... Not to be disrespectful or attack you or anything, but if you want to get any idea about how the fanbase as a whole thinks of and treats a series, places like 4chan and kink memes and Gaia aren't the best places ever to look. Those are pretty much the SHALLOW! TEE HEE! centers of the internet (and I know that's a generalization, and I've seen some AWESOME art on chans and some AWESOME fics in kink memes, and am in a ajfhakjashk whoashit RP on Gaia, but hoshot). I've seen pretty much just as much love for the crack and the interesting twist it gives to history than I have of the slash -- maybe even moreso, though I haven't been keeping track or anything.

Re: OP of 139

(Anonymous) 2008-12-01 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not gonna lie, it is probably the reason, but it's not surprising because it happens in any fandom. Just your secret sounded like everyone's into Hetalia just because of that. Just letting you know that there are people in the fandom that think otherwise and that some are pretty knowledgeable about history and still like it nonetheless.

Re: OP of 139

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
And that people like the slash and the history as well. Hell, more might like the history, the characters and humor more than the slash. There are a myraid of reason fans love Hetalia.

I wish people think that it has to be one reason and one reason only. And there's plenty of series that are equally or more slashable that don't even have much of a fandom.

Re: OP of 139

(Anonymous) 2008-12-01 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
Cute boys and slashing are the common, though, but you're right! There are a lot of different reasons why people are into Hetalia. I like it because of the humor, the characters' personalities, and without a doubt the history taught with these characters. Too bad that some people generalize, particularly at this fandom.

Re: OP of 139

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
...doesn't has to be one reason...
Typos are my friends today.

Re: OP of 139

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Isn't all 'wai wai country slash' either. And, OMG believe it or not, not all BL/slashy things get popular either, especially something like Hetalia who has canon BL (which are actually have put some thought into). And so what if it's slash, is it better if it was all het couples because you seem to be stuck on the slash part for some odd reason?

And everyone could agree that yesterday's 114 OP was an idiot, every fandom has it, aren't the Hetalia fandom not allowed to have them too (although they can leave if they dare wank up the community and unable to keep their mouth shut)? Any idiot can say the same thing for any Hispanic fictional character in any series that has them, that particular one just chose Hetalia. So no, it's a bad example of how the fandom is.

Re: OP of 139

(Anonymous) 2008-12-01 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not stuck on the slash, even though I don't like slash, it's just that's what everyone else focuses on. If it was about pairing countries up heterosexually, it'd still be offensive...but the quality of fandom might be better.

Hetalia fandom idiots have a tendency to become ten times as rude as your normal fandom idiots. Behind the faces of the characters there are countries where people actually live. You guys seem to forget that an awful lot.

Stuck on the slash.

Well, duh since one of the popular characters in the series is an anthropomorphic of my country, America, which I find hilarious to be honest. A vast majority of people know that these characters ACTUALLY believe that people living in these countries really act like that. Also it helps that the countries do have their own personalities as well so they're actually like every fictional character. Although the stereotypes aren't as bad as you see in any other fiction with a diverse cast (like Captain Planet).

TL;DR: People in the Hetalia fandom aren't as ignorant as you think.

Re: OP of 139

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
believe that people living in these countries don't really act like that.

Major typo fail.

Re: OP of 139

[identity profile] seiberwing.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 10:17 am (UTC)(link)
America is actually a little too accurate, sometimes. <_<

Re: OP of 139

[identity profile] vivi314.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know, it's like you were criticizing the people who are here for the history AND the people who are here for the slash all together =/ There's absolutely no reason to like it, according to you?
But yet again, I 100% understand how you can be offended by it. It's all a question of sensitivity of such issues, and the comedic side of Hetalia, while being harmless to most, can be an iffy subject for you. Nobody has a right to judge. And you have a right not to like.
And TBH, I found the art pretty ugly at first, then got used to it and started fantasizing, haha sorry for that. Most fans, according to a poll in the LJ comm, were there for the history first, and after became converted to the cute boys because the countries are also characters in this manga, with their quirks.
Not saying, however, that there aren't retards in this fandom. They're irritating, and usually the loudest; and yeah, they would do anything for the cute boys in compromising situations.
So basically, I just thought you were generalizing a little. Many are not hardcore yaoi fans, most are not insensitive human beings disregarding history.
Well, it was all a biased rambling for my fandom's sake, hope you don't mind. We all got your opinions, and it's nice to see that you go against the current for your beliefs. Just don't put the same label to everyone in this fandom. :)
