101. I'm kind of laughing at all the reactive "WELL U JUST DONT KNO TEH GUD OV DIFFERNT MEDIUMS" replies to this. Also the troll calling. You idiots, are you just incapable of thinking? First of all, the picture is of a bunch of serial newsstand-type comics. I'm sorry, but most of those blow goats. Second of all, it is absolutely, unquestionably true that the medium of comics/graphic novels has produced works of profound depth and insight and deserve their place right next to the classics on the bookshelves of intellectuals. Maus is one. Cerebus is another. ElfQuest was an excellent piece of storytelling through art until WaRP got old and jaded and sold out to artists who couldn't draw a straight line with a ruler. A Distant Soil is, in my opinion, a load of nauseating emo crap, but the art is spectacular, and the story is certainly not bad, despite the rather stomach-turningly steriotyped nature of the characters. And that's just a few examples.

BUT.

For all the classics of the comic-book genre add to storytelling as a whole, it's a genre that's been around for too little time to be able to compete with "real books." There just isn't enough genuinely important graphic storytelling to justify liking it "better" for most people -- because, face it, most people crowing their opinions around here aren't high intellectuals who are considering the contributions of graphic storytelling to the literary craft as a whole. Most of them are people who can't handle heavy intellectual content unless it's spoon-fed in picture-book form.

In short... comics/graphic novels are a totally valid literary medium, but "preferring" them is really taking the easy way out and ignoring the thousands of years of extraordinary literature that's been created by humanity worldwide.

139. I have no idea what this is, but to be totally honest, I'm laughing at anyone who thinks it's worth a thousand replies of wank. I'm willing to consider that there MIGHT be one or two people reading/posting here who were personally affected by WWII and can remember it. I'm sure MOST people here know or have known WWII vets personally. SOME of you might have had a relationship that was close enough, over a long enough period of time, with a vet or survivor who was affected enough for it to matter in their every day lives, and for that reason you might be affected by their experiences enough to give a flying fuck about some random-ass weaboo wankfodder and what people think of it. But I seriously, SERIOUSLY doubt most of you have any ground to care as much as you seem to, which leads me to think this manga attracts a fandom of people who just sit there and BEG for drama like cheap whores.

Tough guys ought to leave calling cards.

But hey! That picture doesn't show the spines of those books, so they could be shit for all we know. Leveled playing field, no need to continue argument.

139. lolwhut? This is why you need comments because you will find yourself proven wrong. And the fandom BEG for drama? Dude, the fandom doesn't even have any wank itself and we know it can get shit. No, people got pissed that the OP called them insensitive and a bunch of horndogs for liking it, disregarding that there are fans have lost family during the war or have surviving close family members during WW2 and know the severity the war has done or people liking it for various reasons. And no, it's not wankfodder either.

Quite honestly, compared with a wealth of material that has non-PC humor based around the WWs, it's rather tame and doesn't disrespect it.

A rational criticism? GET OUT, TROLL

...By which I mean A+, man. It's a pulpy, cheap medium, and while there are some absolute stunners being produced, the majority is rubbish. Nothing wrong with liking them, but in fandom, legitimate criticism of a genre/medium/series/whatever is often written off as SOMEONE HATES THIS THING I LIKE, I MUST DEFEND IT. Not that the original secret was fantastically well-presented, but, you know.

I agree with some of your points, but please don't generalize comic readers like you know all of them personally. It makes your entire argument (which reeks of a superiority complex anyway) weak.
