if you're gonna read an Anne Rice novel, read one that isn't narrated by the most annoying whiner to ever grace the pages of a novel ever. Go with The Vampire Lestat

Fuck yes. FUCK YES. I loved about half of Queen of the Damned, and I actually liked Interview with the Vampire when I realized (upon reading The Vampire Lestat and seeing the REMARKABLE change in writing style XD) that it wasn't written in an irritating fashion because that was Anne Rice's style, but because... lol it was Louis. >____> And everything after Queen of the Damned started irking the hell out of me with Rice quickly seeming to lose her grasp of characterization.

The Vampire Lestat, however, is one of the few books that made me cry. Unashamedly. I'd recommend it to people not just as a good vampire book, but a good book. Which feels odd to say about a Rice novel, but hey! XD

Yeah, I finished with Anne Rice after QotD. She's insane, basically.

However, if she were ever to decide to write a book dedicated solely to Mary Beth Mayfair, I'd read that. I regularly reread the history of the Mayfair witches.

Yeah, I don't like to look at what she actually says or believes about things IRL, because what little I have just depresses me. But she's my first example when I point out that it's totally possible for an author to write their own characters as being out of character -- I was never Louis's hugest fan, but what she did to him starting with the first bit of Tale of the Body Thief was just. Horrible. According to everything she'd said about him and done with him up to that point, it didn't make any sense, and was never explained because she just seemed to want an excuse (or no excuse) to drop the character.

I need to read the Mayfair witches books. =O I've heard interesting things about them, but could never get into the first one. 'Course, I haven't tried it in years, so it may have just been how I was feeling at the time.

It's a hard book to get into. And it's essentially two books in one, because she's got the main plot, and then her main characters sits down and reads the entire history on this family of witches, of which there are thirteen. So by the time you get back to the plot, you'd kind of forgotten there was one. But the history is by far the more interesting part. Whenever I want to read that book again, I basically just read that part and then I'm done.

I think I just like the history aspect of her stories, because that's why Queen of the Damned is my favorite vampire book. I love that it's the vampiric origin story.

I got sucked in before I could stop myself, and pretty much lost all the respect I had for her. So now I can read her insanity and laugh, because I just can't stand her anymore, but back when I was first finding out what she was like, it was so depressing.
