Is the problem really because he's black, or he's not stereotypically British? Or... stereotypically the Doctor?

I dunno. I'm confused about the whole issue. I personally am waiting for the day when the Doctor regenerates as a woman.

I think a lot of us are betting it's the race thing just because the guy really is very British. Actually, he was in those two Doctor Who episodes as Roderick already -- the ones with the alternate universe? (You may have already known that, I just wasn't sure so though it needed mentioning. XD I didn't until I looked the name up.) He was also the marquis de Carabas in Neverwhere, if you've seen that. His voice, way of speaking, mannerisms and all are very British. It's hard to say he's not, unless you're pulling a weird reason out of nowhere, and the only thing we can really think of that the OP might be drawing on is probably the color of his skin.

I can see "not stereotypically the Doctor," almost, but yeah, it still makes very little sense to me. Why get worked up about the actor (or actress!) before you see them in the role? He could be played by a black man or a thirteen year old girl, and if the person they picked for the part was awesome, they'd be an awesome Doctor, full stop. Judging someone before they even get the part seems weird to me.

But yeah, I agree. Totally would like either a woman Doctor or, if they could get a talented enough kid, a child doctor. And by child I don't mean teen to bring in all the teenfans (because while that could be done well, it could also easily suck), I kind of want to see him as like. An eleven or twelve year old boy. XD WEIRD OF ME AND MOST MIGHT NOT AGREE, BUT. Who fandom should just chillax for the most part, seriously. People seem to be having aneurysms lately about the littlest things.

Kay, I officially love this guy. I don't care who he plays. He was in Neverwhere, that's enough for me.

I never even thought about the Doctor as a child. That would be AMAZING on several different levels.

There's a whole comm dedicated to the Doctor being played by Rachel Weisz. Because of that comm, that is the woman I'd want as the first female Doctor.

The Who fandom is one of the crazier ones I've been in, but it kind of fits the show, don't you think? I mean, not all the wank and stuff, just the sheer absurdity of it all. As Nine would say (yeah, I admit, Nine is MY Doctor) it's fantastic.

I KNOW SO DID I. For the first one. For the second I totally didn't recognize him by name, but he looked familiar and I had to look him up. |D I officially kinda want him to be the Doctor now (though I won't mind if he's not), just because I'm a dork and will be constantly thinking of him as the Doctor de Carabas. XDD

Yeah, I totally like the idea of the Doctor as a kid, even more than as a woman maybe. I'm not sure why, but the idea just clicks well with me. Unfortunately, it's a lot less likely, because they'd have to get a kid who could both pull it off and would be willing to do at least a full season in an intense, starring role. Not impossible by any stretch, but I can see it being a bit harder.

... just looked Rachel Weisz up, and wow, just by appearances she looks the part pretty well! That would be kind of epic.

And yes, the sheer epic insanity of the fandom, minus the bad things, is absolutely fantastic and amazing. As a previous secret said, the wankier sections could stand to be a little more sonic. >_>
