Vent I guess?

(Anonymous) 2020-05-25 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
F!S, I’m living in a rural area with little to no public transport. Taxis are expensive and having a car or bike is out of the question because I have a neurological condition that impacts my balance and perception. I’m nearly 30 and starting to feel self conscious because I can’t drive and usually have to walk or rely on my parents or siblings for rides. Anyone got any advice or pick me ups to help out? It’d be appreciated ❤️

I’m so sorry, anon. That sounds really tough and I’m afraid I don’t really have any good advice. In my area, there’s a special bus service that runs for people with disabilities. I’m not sure of the criteria one needs to meet to ride it, but I’ve seen the buses in the rural towns where I work that have near zero public transportation. Do you know if the public transportation in your area has a similar service?

This probably won't help, but have you taken a look at those mobility scooter type of things? A lot of them might be too, uh, wheelchair-y? And if you're healthy enough to walk long distances, you probably dont need or want one. But I've seen some that almost look and feel like a regular scooter except slower and two wheels at the back instead of one. A quick search showed me some options that go up to 10 mph or even 18 mph, but it also appears different countries have different laws. Still, that's faster than I can walk.

They're not cheap either. But I just wanted to throw this out here, just in case. Hopefully you find some good advice or thoughts in this thread (or anywhere really)!

Fanfic Rant

(Anonymous) 2020-05-26 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
I'm reading a fairly long Drarry fic, and it's competently written, but so far Harry has been pretty useless and it's driving me nuts. It's not that he lacks characterization. He just hasn't really done anything but blunder and bumble and make mistakes (and fall for Draco, ofc).

This is such a huge pet peeve of mine - not just with Drarry but with all ships. I can't stand when one half of a pairing is written as daft and incompetent in order for the other to show off how smart and capable they are.

Sorry, OP

What book are you reading/What is the last book you read?

(Anonymous) 2020-05-25 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm currently reading Trans Love: An Anthology of Transgender and Non-Binary Voices, edited by Freiya Benson.
It's bee alright so far - I picked it up from the library months ago before everything got lockdown and just got round to reading it. It's the first book I've ever come across that discussed non-binary so that was kind of awesome.

Currently reading Priory of the Orange Tree thanks to a rec from this group. Also reading a Babylon 5 reference book.

I’m working my way through all the books I own since the library’s still closed. I’m currently rereading Twilight. It doesn’t give me the same feeling that it gave me when I first read it way back in the day, but I still enjoy most of it.

I am reading through a bunch of old Tim Powers books at the moment

I think I'm going to have to buy some books soon, though, like... it's becoming a necessity. The library's closed, I don't have an e-reader, and I would really like things that I can sit and read in the yard so I don't have to be indoors.

Rosemary and Rue, the first October Daye book.

I... assume that the series gets better at some point. Because damn, that was flat, uninspired, exposition-heavy, and full of characters out of Generic Casting.

Just finished Pulp Friction by Julie Anne Lindsey and I'm flailing because the book ends on a cliffhanger (with the heroine realizing who has been stalking her the whole book) and I'm dyyyyyyyyyyyyying because it JUST came out in April.

It's going to be aaaaaaaaaaages for the next book. UGH.

I'm reading The Sun Down Motel by Simone St. James. An interesting mystery but we've met the obligatory love interest and I can already feel myself drifting.

The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton for fiction. I loved it! It's hard to explain what I loved most about it without massive spoilers, but it's almost everything I want in a mystery plot.

Current bedside book is Computer Organization and Design by Patterson Hennessy. Er, significantly less exciting, but there's a lot of stuff that I've always wanted to know being explained so that's kinda cool.

The Public Good by Crista McHugh. It's kind of hard/depressing to read (there's a new birth control drug that has a secret "side effect" that makes WOC sterile, and the CEO of the pharmaceutical company that makes it is part of a white supremacist super PAC who funds Republican senators, and they're trying to get it covered under a new healthcare bill, none of which actually sounds outside the realm of possibility in this dystopian version of reality we're living in right now) but it's also been super predictable so far and I have no doubt that the bad guys are going to go down and everyone's going to live happily ever after.

The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides. It's about a woman who kills her husband and is living in a mental institution and the main character is a psychologist who's trying to understand her brain or whatever. It's one of those supposedly "shocking" twisty types of books where we know that she DID kill her husband, the mystery is WHY (and I can't think of a reason other than he was abusive or she's just crazy, neither of which is particularly shocking, so IDK). I've heard tons of good things, but I'm about 1/4 of the way through and so far nothing much has happened, so I'm hoping it picks up soon.

Cut & Run by Madeleine Urban and Abigail Roux. It's about two FBI agents who are paired together to investigate a serial killer who's killed a couple of FBI agents (among lots of other people). One's the buttoned up/by the book type and the other is the one who doesn't believe in rules and does crazy things to catch bad guys or whatever, and they can't stand each other at first, but they eventually ~fall in love~. I think it's fairly well known among M/M fans (at least I feel like it was being rec'd everywhere back in my earlier days in slash fandom) and even though it's super predictable and cliche it's entertaining enough so far.

Collective community wisdom question thread....

[personal profile] tabaqui 2020-05-26 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
So i have worn two copper rings on my left thumb for years. Like - a decade or more. I have two other copper rings on other fingers of my left hand.

About...8 months ago, suddenly i was getting this weird irritated/itchy/red spot on the top of my thumb, under the rings. I thought maybe the cat had caught me, so I took them off for a couple days and used a little A&D and gauze to soothe it. It went away - rings back on - it came back.

Finally, I took them off for over a month. Put them back on yesterday (after a good wash with soap, rings and me both), and within about 4 hours the irritated spot was back. I'm currently wearing one of the rings on my right hand, and other than annoying (i don't do rings on that hand), nothing is happening.

Can you get sensitized to something in just one place? My necklace that I never take off also has a copper chain, and a copper pendant from it that I've worn for 30 years at least. I am baffled!

I'm reading "A Wicked Kind of Husband" by Mia Vincy. I go through phases with historical romances. Really been into them in the last couple of weeks.

Also reading A Game of Thrones by GRRM. Now that the show is over my friends encouraged me to read the books. It's better than trying to rewatch the show by a long mile.

OK so like... the readership for paranormal-romance-urban-fantasy-detective type stories is primarily het women, right?

so why do so many book covers in the genre feature a perfectly framed shot of the heroine's great, leather-pants-clad ass?
