Trying to be as realistic as possible takes away a lot of the fun. It's like worrying about how real sword fights work down to the smallest detail during a fight scene that also utilizes magic. For sure, too much unrealistic stuff sort of breaks the entire thing but there are certain things we can all agree one we don't care is true to life or not...in fact in many cases it's preferred it's not real to life.

Monsterfucking comes to mind.

Yes! I'm so tired of people complaining about stuff automatically sucking because it's "not realistic". Like, okay, if it's super imporant to them that stuff be realistic, then fine, but stop trying to ruin the fun of people who just want to be entertained and do not care if it's realistic or not.

Honestly a lot of people pushing the line that "realism" is more woke and the priority is documenting the "true gay experience" have probably not read much if any smut fiction written by gay men for a gay male audience. Because HOO BOY do you not find anything resembling "realism" there either, and the writers are COMPLETELY unapologetic about that. Realism is just not the goal. Hot fantasy is the goal. And what's hot and what's not is very subjective.

I mean it's the same for M/F romances too or F/F romances. If they were realistic in every aspect it wouldn't be as fun and they wouldn't be fantasies. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that since women (or perceived to be women) writing most of this content in fandom spaces there's a higher standard for them to meet otherwise they're judged to be fetishists or something equally ridiculous.

NAYRT: Alas, pervasive homophobia and anti-femininity have driven me to a hard "not your fucking business" when it comes to straight people doing discourse about which of my sexual relationships are "realistic." And I think there's a double-standard going on in this discussion in that gay relationships are not allowed to be diverse in the same way as het relationships.

SA: That, and publicity is publicity and creatives seem to love telling fandom things they want to hear in order to get a signal boost.

Whoops, wrong thread.
