Unless they're getting paid, it's not really dishonest.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-29 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Eh? Dishonesty isn't decided by profit or lack thereof.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-29 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Stealing the basic plot and character designs from someone else and then later claiming that they're entirely your own creations is basically the definition of being dishonest.

Hey, folks! This just in! You can't plagiarize something unless you're getting paid for it!

That's not how it works.

I... feel like I know what fandom this is, but have no idea who the artist might be.
They might pretend it's not based on that AU, but if the designs are really obvious they shouldn't be surprised if someone starts making comparisons.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-29 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
That sounds like the kind of thing that can bite them in the ass later on.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-29 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this would annoy me a little. Like, I don't think they need to shout it through a megaphone on repeat that their thing began as a fan comic. But if they're actively claiming it didn't begin that way, that's a bit annoying.

This is like back-in-the-day Devianart, when people use to take screen shots of characters from Yu-Gi-Oh! - re-color it- and then claim that it's not Yugi but it's actually their own original character Morgan Moonshinefire~ and in no way connected to Yu-Gi-Oh!

(Anonymous) 2020-05-29 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
Ahh, I remember those days... Good times.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-29 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's kinda messed up. They should have just started a new original story from scratch.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-29 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
The story is original, just the character designs (and their character traits) are still more or less the same.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-29 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
Is it Floraverse? That's really the only webcomic I can think of that remotely matches that description.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-29 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
Nope. The comic has nothing at all to do with the game the characters are from,

(Anonymous) 2020-05-30 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
is this that webcomic with the metal gear solid expys? if so yeah i couldn't read it because it was so awkward to see them literally rip the characters designs directly but with the personalities of a bad fanfic

if not, welp, the concept bugs me too
