A good show is a good show. IMO. I don't really care about the lack of females characters in fiction and I don't see why people should. A character is more than his or her sex. A character is just a medium used to tell the story. People should stop taking fandom so seriously.

Oh, it's you again.

Let me spell it out for you in small words:

The lack of female characters, even in good shows, reminds me of how women are still treated as "other" and men as "default." This makes me sad. This makes it somewhat more difficult for me to enjoy a show, even if it is a good show.

I'm the exact same way, but love Kaiji. I think it's because it never comes off as "women are unimportant"- just that they're so far removed from the worlds in which the series is set (both the terrifying underworld setting and Kaiji's personal life, hurr).

It never sat badly with me, unlike heaps of other series where there are many female characters, but they're all cheap stereotypes who are sidelined/degraded/killed for cliched drama. Unfortunately, since most anime is riddled with terrible treatment of female characters, it's really easy to peg Kaiji as just another show that ignores women, instead of what it is- a show that focuses on men's problems. (though you could read most shounen series as focusing on men, that's just because they ignore women. Kaiji seems to be a show that honestly is dealing with men's issues- drinking, gambling, etc, what happens when men have no way out of a low socioeconomic background but keep trying for it anyway)

I don't really see how gambling is necessarily a Man's Issue, but hey, maybe the series will prove me wrong. I'm willing to give it a try despite the lack of female characters, because I've heard so much good about it.

Honestly, it's more my general inertia that keeps me from getting into it at this point.
