143. You know what I find what is the funniest part of this secret? Chances are that the OP prolly uses icons that used official art, photos, comics/manga, cartoon/anime screenshot crops to make. If OP doesn't, I'll apologize, but frankly, I'm fucking tired of this bullshit entitlement that some fanartists think they have, telling people not to use their fanart but uses official stuff for their stuff and download episodes and comic/manga characters. When did all of a sudden that official stuff doesn't matter as much? People worked hard on it too, if not more. No one asked for permission for that stuff either, except that very, very, very rare case.

I agree that iconists who get pissed that one person didn't credit their stuff but don't bother with crediting the artists whom art they make icons from need a good slap on the face. But fanartists who uses official stuff as their icons and, sell their prints and the such need one too if they get pissed someone is using their for icons.

Unless someone claims your fanart as theirs or selling it without your permission, you really don't have any right to bitch if someone made icons out of it. It would be nice if the iconist asked your permission, but it is a courtesy, not a right. No, you don't get nor deserve special treatment, good day.

I would've agreed with this secret if the OP included official stuff, but it shows one of the most irritating issues I have with the fanartists.

Although, I admit, defriending them is harsh.

Don't most people in fandom do that? It's clearly not limited to fan artists. No one credits official art, because presumably everyone in the fandom already knows where it comes from.

I'm just wondering - if crediting is a courtesy, than not giving it would make the person in question discourteous. Why shouldn't someone at least have the right to be miffed at discourteous behavior? Think about it: you work hard on something, then someone else crops it and redistributes it en masse, all the while demanding other people credit them for their effort. It seems reasonable you should be able to ask for the same treatment.

I'm talking about fanartists who has no qualms in using official art but forbids others to use their art for non-profit reasons like sharing it on 4chan for example.

And I said that iconists who don't credit while demanding credit for their stuff are just as silly too.

And when I meant by courtesy, I meant it as a nice gesture. You can get mad about it but you pretty much set yourself up for it and you really don't have the right to be angry.

While making icons might not be for profit, it is an activity that brings "fandom cred". Usually when people make an icon for personal use that's not intended to be shared, or pass around fan art on 4chan, I tend to think that's alright, as it's mostly on par with saving the image for yourself to look at every now and then. I still wish people would remember the names of the artists when they do that, though, to make it easier to find their work.

But when it comes to icons, a lot of other stuff come up. Yeah, iconists who ask for credit and refuse to do it themselves are silly. But the reality is that most iconists do ask for credit. It may be so that people can find their icons easier, but then they have the responsibility to do the same for their sources. And this "Textless icons are not bases thing"? LOL. You crop the hell out of someone else's artwork, and you don't want other people putting text on your 100x100?

A courtesy is a courtesy, but the hypocrisy still annoys me.
